Save the roof

Melva Robinson says she has worked hard all of her life.
And at times, she felt she didn’t have a whole lot to show for it.
That was why Robinson got excited when she learned two of her neighbors, Cindy and Greg Warner, nominated her for the national No Roof Left Behind program in March. Later on, she was named one of four finalists to receive a free roof from Frost Roofing, of Wapakoneta.

Man burned at factory

A man working second shift at a Wapakoneta factory Friday night was transported by Life Flight after receiving severe burns.
The 51-year-old employee was burnt by boiling water while working at General Aluminum, 13663 Short Road, Wapakoneta, shortly after 7 p.m., according to local scanner traffic from the Wapakoneta Police and Wapakoneta EMS.
The man, whose family had not yet been identified, suffered what was described as second-degree burns to between 50 and 60 percent of his body.

Karen S. Sheipline, 72

Karen S. Sheipline, 72, of Hershey, Pa., formally of Columbus, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013, at her home, while under Hospice care.
She was born Sept. 10, 1940, in Columbus, the daughter of the late Sylvia (Wear) and Roy Reed.
Surviving are her husband, Larry L. Sheipline, of Hershey, Pa. (formally of Wapakoneta); and two brothers, Frank J. Reed Sr., of Columbus, and William (Bill) A. (Sheila) Reed, of Bexley.

County to add charge

County offices and agencies using a fuel complex at the Auglaize County Engineer’s Office are to pay an additional 15 cents per gallon to help maintain the system.
The decision was made recently after Auglaize County Engineer Doug Reinhart approached the county commissioners about a way to pay for upgrades needed to keep the fuel complex operational.
Fourteen agencies other than the Engineer’s Office use the fueling station ‘sfuels at cost. All 15 agencies would be charged the 15 cent per gallon fee.

Wapak clinches share of WBL regular season title

The Wapakoneta Redskins clinched a share of the regular season Western Buckeye League title Thursday.
Wapak, with a 5-0 win Thursday over the St. Marys Roughriders, improved to 8-0 in the WBL through eight matches with one to play.

The Redskins will face Van Wert on Monday in its league finale.

A win by Wapak against Van Wert would clinch the league’s regular season title outright and would give Wapak 10 points for first place entering the WBL tournament.

After securing a first game win, Wapakoneta Redskin varsity volleyball coach Amy Ruppert felt her team had finally shaken off the “albatross around their neck,” but the Bath Wildkittens battled back Thursday in the second game and took the last two in convincing fashion.

Bulldogs blank Wapakoneta, 5-0, in WBL game

The Wapakoneta Redskins were blanked 5-0 by the defending Western Buckeye League champion Celina Bulldogs on Thursday in varsity girls soccer action in Celina.

The Bulldogs led 2-0 after 6 minutes and 10 seconds of game action, on goals from Caelyn Reineke and Jenna Berry. Elyssa Sheriff added another in the first half to give Celina a 3-0 halftime lead.

Emily Jackson and Holli Brackman each scored in the second half for the Bulldogs.

Celina had 13 shots on goal, while Wapak notched five.

Wapakoneta edges St. Marys, 171-177, in WBL match

The Wapakoneta Redskins went unbeaten in home league matches this season, as they concluded the home portion of their Western Buckeye League schedule Thursday with a 171-177 win over the St. Marys Roughriders at the Wapakoneta Country Club.

Wapak went 4-0 in league matches in 2013.

Bobby Crow led Wapak with a nine-hole score of 40 on Thursday.

Crow has shot a 40 in four straight matches.

Drew Wayman followed Crow with a 41. Ryan Hunlock (44) and Nick Bruns (46) rounded out Wapak’s scoring.
