Wapakoneta grabs league win over Defiance

The Wapakoneta Redskins kept the Defiance Bulldogs winless this season with a 5-0 victory Tuesday in Western Buckeye League girls soccer action.

The win moved Wapak to 7-3-0 overall and 2-3-0 in the WBL.

Defiance dropped to 0-9 overall and 0-5 in the league.

Brittany Pequignot scored three of Wapak’s five goals Tuesday and assisted on the other two.

Claire Burton and Leah Schattschneider each scored once for the Redskins.

Wapak beats Indian Lake to finish home slate at 7-0

The Wapakoneta Redskins completed their home schedule undefeated in 2013 after a 179-207 win Tuesday over the Indian Lake Lakers in non-league varsity boys golf action.

The win made Wapak 7-0 at home this season.

“It’s always nice to win at home but especially for the senior group,” Wapak varsity coach Kenny Wayman said. “We couldn’t ask for a better ending for the senior class.

Wapakoneta loses 5th straight match against Kalida

The Wapakoneta Redskins lost their fifth straight match Tuesday in a 3-0 sweep by the Kalida Wildcats in non-league varsity volleyball action.

Kalida won by scores of 25-23, 25-14 and 25-22.

Wapak fell to 6-6 overall after a 6-1 start.

Jadyn Nuss had 21 digs for Wapak.

The Redskins received four aces from Karli Schneider.

Lea Stoner led Wapak with 13 blocks, while Josie Miller added 12.

Botkins wins 1st SCAL match over Houston

The Botkins Trojans won their first Shelby County Athletic League match of the season Tuesday with a 3-1 victory over the Houston Wildcats in varsity volleyball play in Botkins.

Botkins is now 1-5 in the SCAL and 4-8 overall.

Tuesday’s scores were 19-25, 25-16, 25-20 and 27-25.

For the Trojans, Denise Schwartz had 18 kills to go with seven aces.

Sami Vehorn notched 16 kills for Botkins.

Allison Guckes tallied 26 digs for the Trojans.

Rachelle Maurer supplied six aces for Botkins.

Trojans record 1st win of season

Natalie Ambos posted five goals to help lead the Botkins Trojans to their first win of the season Tuesday with a 6-0 defeat of the Cory-Rawson Hornets in non-league varsity girls soccer action.

Botkins is now 1-6-2 overall this season.

Carly Harshbarger posted Botkins’ first goal of the game before Ambos scored five straight.

Keirstyn Rogers notched her first shutout of the season in goal, tallying three saves and three steals.

Botkins edges Cory-Rawson, 1-0, in non-league

The Botkins Trojans recorded a 1-0 win Tuesday over the Cory-Rawson Hornets in a non-league varsity boys soccer contest in Botkins.

Botkins’ lone goal was scored by Nolan Greve.

The win moved Botkins to 3-4-2 overall this season.

The Trojans will host the Franklin Monroe Jets on Monday in a non-league contest.

There are only two names left — Lima’s Kenneth Sturgill and Wapakoneta’s Lucy Zink — in the 4th annual Publishers’ Dash for Cash. The grand prize winner would take home $5,000 and the first name drawn of the last two would take home $1,000.
Sturgill says he will apply the winnings toward his car or house.
Zink says she will use it to replace an appliance.

Dolly Goins, 63

Dolly Jean Goins, 63, of Wapakoneta, died Tuesday morning, Sept. 17, 2013, at her residence.
She was born Dec. 9, 1949, in Charleston, W. Va., the daughter of Maggie Leona (Dunn) and Eugene Earl Hudnall, who preceded her in death. On Aug. 8, 1987, she married Raymond Goins, and he survives.
Surviving are two children children, Brenda (Ron) Rupard, of St. Marys, and Paul Thomas Connors Jr., of Wapakoneta; and four step-children, Ernest Craig (Margie) Goins, Terry Lee (Tammy) Goins, Robin Ray (Rhonda) Goins, and Vickie Griffin, all of Indianapolis.
