Animal ordinance tweaked

WAYNESFIELD — Property owners and Waynesfield village officials continue to disagree over a proposed ordinance on eventually eliminating farm animals within the village limits — with those grandfathered prior to its passage being required to register the land where the animals live instead of the animals themselves.

Wapakoneta drops out of poll after 2 appearances

The Wapakoneta Redskins dropped out of the Associated Press poll in Monday’s version of the weekly ranking of Ohio high school football teams, voted upon by media members.

Monday’s poll was the penultimate one of the 2013 season, as the final version will be released next Monday following the conclusion of the regular season by week’s end.

Teams receiving at least 12 points appear in the poll after the voting.

Resembling a scene from AMC’s “The Walking Dead,” zombies trudged down Auglaize Street in Wapakoneta looking for humans — in cars, in shops, in the street.

Police preach safety in numbers

While trick-or-treating may seem like a harmless, family-friendly activity, parents are advised to consider basic safety rules on Halloween. 

Many “hidden” dangers get special attention on this holiday, particularly speeding vehicles and child predators. 

Wapakoneta Police Chief Russ Hunlock said police officers will be monitoring the roadways on Halloween night.

Election forum planned for Wednesday

Locals are invited to come out and meet the candidates for 2013 general election during an election forum to be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Wapakoneta’s YMCA Community Room. 

The Wapakoneta Daily News is organizing the event as a service to the community, Publisher Deb Zwez said. 

“It’s really important for the community to ask questions,” Zwez said, noting that the forum is open to the public.

Flora twins advance to state for Botkins

Chloe Flora and Cameron Flora, sophomore twins at Botkins High School, each qualified for the cross country state championships with finishes inside the top 16 of their respective races Saturday.

Cameron Flora, with a time of 16 minutes, 57.67 seconds, was 14th in the Division III, Region 10 boys race Saturday at Troy High School, while Chloe Flora took seventh with a time of 19:48.14 in the Division III, Region 10 girls race.

Wapakoneta's Zofkie ends season at regionals

Allie Zofkie concluded her strong first high school cross country season Saturday with an appearance at regionals.

The Wapakoneta Redskins freshman placed 66th overall out of 128 runners Saturday in the Division I, Region 2 girls cross country race at Hedges Boyer Park in Tiffin.

Zofkie completed the course in a time of 20 minutes, 37.71 seconds Saturday.

The top 16 individuals not on qualifying teams advanced from Saturday’s regional race to the state championships.

Taylor E. Dicke, 11

Taylor E. Dicke, of New Bremen, died on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 9:12 p.m. at her residence. She was born on Aug. 25, 2002 in St. Marys. She was the daughter of Joseph Dicke and Nicole (Mohler) Dicke, both of New Bremen. Survivors include her sisters Abigayle and Olivia both at home; her grandparents, Roland and Cindy Dicke, of New Bremen, and Mike and Brenda Mohler, of Wapakoneta; her great-grandparents, Eileen Yaney, of Celina, Virginia and David Poe, of Pioneer, Carolyn Pape, of New Bremen and Ona Mohler of Muncie, Mich. Also surviving is a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.

Mildred F. Tucker Rust Carnes, 90

Mildred F. Tucker Rust Carnes, 90, of Allentown, died at 5:50 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013 in the Wapakoneta Manor Nursing Home.
She was born April 14, 1923, in Elida, a daughter of Henry Edgar and Lucy Frances Stemen Tucker, who are deceased. Her step-father, Delbert Huey is also deceased. On Nov. 24, 1946, she married M. Devon Rust, who died June 27, 1950. Then on April 12, 1961, she married John H. Carnes, who died Aug. 19, 1989.
