LEPC helps fund signs

Auglaize County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) members approved funding for emergency response agencies to purchase advance warning signs during a regular meeting Wednesday.
The 4-foot square, bright pink signs would warn motorists of emergency scenes ahead to prevent further problems at the location, explained Jim Williams, who chairs the Grants Committee tasked with determining whether or not to allocate funding for the signs.

Shirley M. (Newland) Rasor, 85

Shirley M. (Newland) Rasor, 85, died at 6:43 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2013, at Hilty Memorial Home in Pandora, Ohio.
Rasor was born to Bassit and Edna (Rapp) Newland on March 9, 1928 in Waynesfield.
She married Charles “Ote” Rasor on Aug. 30, 1947, and he survives in Cairo. Rasor was a graduate of Blume High School in Wapakoneta, class of 1946. She had worked at ExCellO Corporation, retiring after 30 years of employment. She was a member of the Cairo United Methodist Church. Shirley loved sewing, cooking and traveling, and she was an avid photographer.

Inez Ford Niswonger Bovee, 90

Inez Ford Niswonger Bovee, 90, of Wapakoneta, died at 9:07 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2013, at her residence. Inez was born on Sept. 23, 1923, in Cleveland to Kenneth George and Lena (Ford) Niswonger, who preceded her in death. She was also the step-daughter of Isabelle Niswonger, who preceded her in death.
She was also the devoted granddaughter of Margaret Wample Niswonger who resided in Ansonia, Ohio and with whom she spent her early childhood in Ansonia.
On June 12, 1943, she married Lloyd Champlin Bovee, who died in 1992.

Redskins hosting speedy Shawnee in 1st round

A feeling of excitement is flowing through the Wapakoneta schools’ football program right now, and that excited feeling is peaking as the varsity squad is set to begin the playoffs Friday with the Redskins’ first home playoff game ever.

Wapakoneta varsity coach Doug Frye said the excitement is evident in the fact that the line of people at the high school to purchase tickets for Friday’s game was 60 yards in length as he was leaving Tuesday’s practice.

Rev. Paul D. McCann, 97

November 6, 2013

Rev. Paul D. McCann, 97, of Wapakoneta, and formerly of West Liberty, went to be with his Lord on Monday, Nov. 4, 2013.
He was born on June 14, 1916 in Farmington, Ill. On Oct. 31, 1943, he married the former Helen L. Zaebst in Farmington, Ill., and she preceded him in death on April 27, 2006. 
Surviving is a daughter, Becky (Tom) Dickinson, of Wapakoneta, a son, Paul McCann Jr., of Bellefontaine, and four grandchildren.
Paul had been a minister since 1948.
Pastor Floyd Lundy will officiate a 10 a.m. graveside service in the Fairview Cemetery, West Liberty on Thursday.

Jon A. Williams, 75

Jon A. Williams, 75, of Cridersville, died at 11:55 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013, at Wapakoneta Manor Nursing Home. He was born Sept. 17, 1938, in Lima to Frank and Luella Faler Williams.
He married Juanita Naomi Burden Dec. 15, 1962, and she preceded him in death Dec. 19, 2004.
Mr. Williams had been a precision heavy equipment crane operator for Baldwin Lima Hamilton later Clark Equipment, General Dynamics and the Toledo Heavy Equipment Operators Union.  He had served in the U.S. Air Force.

James R. "Jim" Kwiecinski, 75

James R. “Jim” Kwiecinski, 75, of Lima, died at 10:16 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013 at St. Rita’s Medical Center.
Kwiecinski was born to the late Harry and Rose (Scheboth) Kwiecinski on Oct. 12, 1938, in Pittsburgh.
He married Barbara (Klosterman) Griner Kwiecinski on Feb. 9, 1991, and she survives.

Jim Gray, 77

Jim Gray, 77, was born in Lima on Nov. 25, 1935, to David and Evelyn Gray. He graduated from Waynesfield H.S. and the Northwestern Business College in Lima, and also served in the Lima Branch of the National Guard.
He moved to Lady Lake in 1961 to join the citrus industry and created Grays Groves, Inc., which became Grays Orange Barn, which he owned and operated until he retired in 1997.
He was active in the community, opening three new Kiwanis Clubs and serving on the Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed golf, bowling and tennis.

Uniopolis votes to unincorporate

The failure of two property levies and one income tax levy proved moot when Uniopolis village residents approved surrendering the village corporation powers to Union Township.
Forty-nine village residents voted in favoring of unincorporating the village compared to 23 voters against the move. Residents voted against the issue in November 2012.
