Azuba Meffley, 87

Azuba B. Meffley, 87, of Lima, died at 12:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.
She was born Aug. 13, 1925, in Lima City Hospital, to Azuba Blogett and Smiles C. Wolfe, who preceded her in death. On Jan. 6, 1946, she married Gordon (Bud) L. Meffley, who died Dec. 17, 1980.

Bernard McCullough, 90 1/2

Bernard C. “Barney” McCullough, 90 ½ , of Wapakoneta, died at 11 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, at his residence.
He was born in Shinbone, Auglaize County, the son of Olga (Schroer) and Bernard McCullough Sr., who preceded him in death. On Oct. 7, 1944, he married Margaret A. Carlone, and she died Nov. 28, 2009.
Surviving are a daughter, Carol (Chuck) Maurer, of Seattle; a grandson, Christopher Maurer, of Seattle; and a brother, William J. (Joan) McCullough, of Florida.
He was preceded in death by 4 siblings.

Pay raise reasons

Shifting a city employee from hourly to salary does not bother a city elected official, but the raise without an explanation does.

Wapakoneta City Council members heard the second reading of an ordinance Monday to amend job titles and salary ranges for city employees — primarily to shift the Wapakoneta WaterPark general manager from hourly to salary.

Essay helps students discover themselves

Two high school students earned the top two spots in an essay contest — a contest that helped them to find themselves.

Wapakoneta High School seniors Salon Gegel and Makenna Salsbury each wrote an essay for the “Laws of Life” contest, and won first and second place at their school, respectively.

“I wrote about smiling,” Gegel said. “Just smiling at someone can change someone’s day. It can make their day a bit brighter.”

City paid for storm costs

The city received three payments recently — all dealing with reimbursements for clean-up costs for the June 29 wind storm that caused millions of dollars in damage.

While the money is welcomed, city administrators say the money puts only a dent into the total amount spent on cleaning up the streets, fixing electrical lines and grinding up limbs and debris at the Wapakoneta Compost Facility.

Carolyn Phillips, 60

February 4, 2013

Carolyn D. Phillips, 60, of Celina, died at 12:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, at Celina Manor Nursing Home.
She was born Aug. 17, 1952, in Lima, the daughter of Helen (Benzing) and T.J. Roop, who survive in Wapakoneta. On Oct. 28, 1972, she married Russell Phillips, who survives in Celina.

Shirley Lageman, 77

Shirley A. Lageman, 77, 10357 Kettlersville Road, New Knoxville, died at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys following an extended illness.
She was born Aug. 3, 1935, in Auglaize County, the daughter of Carrie (Christler) and John Elsass. On Feb. 14, 1959, she married James Lageman, and he survives at the residence.

Reuben Walton, 89

Reuben J. Walton, 89, of Waynesfield, died at 12:39 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013, at Heartland of Indian Lake.
He was born June 16, 1923, in Wyandot County, the son of Mildred V. (Roby) and Emery E. Walton who preceded him death. On Jan 26, 1946, he married Mildred L. Walter who survives in Waynesfield.
