Charles Webb, 80

Charles E. ‘Charley’ Webb Sr., 80, died at 3:20 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, at Auglaize Acres in Wapakoneta.
He was born Feb. 16, 1933, in Wapakoneta, to Florence Freideger and Pearl Webb.
Surviving are a son, Charles E. ‘Charley’ Webb Jr. of Lima; a daughter, Annette Elaine Volz, of Toledo; five grandchildren; a brother, James (Shirley) Webb, of Wapakoneta; and three sisters, Edna (Glenn) Steed, of Wapakoneta, Mary (Jack) Selover, of Turlock, Claif., and Sharon (Dave) Erb, of Arlington.
He was preceded in death by a brother, William Webb.

June Meiring, 84

June V. Meiring, 84, of Wapakoneta, died at 1:14 a.m. Saturday, March 2, 2013, at Wapakoneta Manor, surrounded by her family.
She was born June 29, 1928, in New Knoxville, the daughter of Frances E. (Kattman) and Walter A. Kuck, who preceded her in death. She was married to Harry Meiring, and he died in 1990.

3 Redskins finish in Top 6 at State Wrestling

COLUMBUS — Three Redskin wrestlers ended their high school career on Saturday, all placing in the Top 6 in the State Wrestling Tournament in Columbus, Ohio.

Wapakoneta sent four seniors to the State tournament, and three of them made it to the final day of wrestling. Those three were John “JT” Martin, Holden Hengstler and Nate Valentine. Alec “AJ” Brown also traveled to the tournament, but he was eliminated on Friday.

COLUMBUS — With two days of wrestling completed, three of the four Wapakoneta Redskin wrestlers making the trip to Columbus are preparing for a Saturday morning session at the state tournament.

Wapakoneta sent four wrestlers to the 2013 OHSAA State Wrestling Tournament in Columbus, and three of them are still alive in the consolation bracket.

The four Wapakoneta Redskins at the State Wrestling Tournament didn’t want to participate in the evening session on Thursday night.

Why?

Well, that was only for the wrestlers who lost their first match.

Alec “AJ” Brown, Holden Hengstler, John “JT” Martin and Nate Valentine went 4-for-4 on the mat Thursday afternoon to move on to the Friday morning session.

Seeking public servants

The mayor of Wapakoneta intends to review rules for seating members on two commissions to expand the net from which to entice members as well as to take advantage of the expertise of individuals in the region.

Mayor Rodney Metz said he needs to fill one position each on two commissions — one on Wapakoneta City Waste Minimization Commission and one on the Wapakoneta City Tree Commission — but he wants to do some research before he submits names to serve.

Monitor retires, will miss students

A local school employee is retiring from a place where she not only spent her career, but where she also spent her high school years.

Diane Schlosser retired from her duties as a cafeteria monitor and food service employee from the Wapakoneta Middle School at the end of February, but she will still be coming back to the building as she continues her duties as the administrative assistant for the Wapakoneta Education Association (WEA).

Spelling bee champ prepares for regionals

The reigning spelling bee champion is gearing up for a regional competition this month, but in the meantime she has been studying.

Wapakoneta Middle School seventh-grader Loren Hire, who napped the top spot at the school’s annual spelling bee, moves on to compete in the regional contest on March 23 in Lima.

“The school gave me a spelling packet, and it tells of different origins of words,” Hire said of a list of words she has been studying to prepare for the competition.

Juanita Holt, 89

Juanita Mae Holt, 89, of Wapakoneta, formerly of Fostoria, died Wednesday Feb. 27, 2013, at the Wapakoneta Manor with her family by her side.
She was born March 18, 1923 in Wayne, to Catherine (Milligan) and Carl Armstrong. On April 7, 1956, in Fostoria she married Melvin E. Holt, and he died on Nov. 9, 1996.

John Kuffner, 84

John F. “Jack” Kuffner, 84, of St. Marys, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013, at his residence.
He was born March 23, 1928, in Washington D.C., the son of Dr. Elizabeth (Yahl) and Fred Kuffner. On July 26, 1953, he married Alma Shaw, and she survives at the residence.
