Motel evacuated, spill under investigation

Wapakoneta Police Department personnel are investigating the possibility that someone intentionally poured a chemical down the hallway of a local motel.

Guests staying in 10 rooms and one employee were evacuated from the building when the call came in at 8:07 a.m. Monday from someone at the hotel.

Darlene Petty, 62

March 25, 2013

Darlene E. Petty, 62, of Piqua, died at 11:45 a.m. Saturday, March 23, 2013, at the James Cancer Hospital in Columbus.
She was born June 9, 1950, in Lima, to the late Eugene and Dorothy (Stover) Hefner. On Sept. 23, 1988, in Troy, she married Darin “Scott” Petty, and he survives.
Also surviving are a sister, Anna (Pat) Gibson, of Wapakoneta; three brothers, Dana (Cheryl)Hefner, of Whitehall, Tony (Vicki) Hefner, of Wapakoneta, and Loren (Kris) Hefner, of Perrysburg; father- and mother-in-law, Mitch and Janice Petty, of Piqua; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles; and four God children.

Mary Jo Duckro, 84

Mary Jo Duckro, 84, of Wapakoneta, died at 11:20 p.m. Thursday, March 21, 2013, at Wapakoneta Manor.
She was born Oct. 24, 1928, the daughter of Lucille C. (Koch) and Henry C. Nipgen, who preceded her in death. On May 7, 1949, she married Harold G. Duckro, and he died Oct. 26, 2000.

New director reflects on Music & More

More than 1,000 youth in 17 show choirs converged on Wapakoneta High School on Saturday to take part in the annual Music & More show choir competition.

“It’s all about the kids,” first-time director Tim Smith said. “Nothing is as inspiring and energizing as working with kids.”

“Music & More is a chance for the students to come on stage, showcase all of he hard work they have put into their show and be cheered on by a full house of audience members,” he said.

Wildlife pendulum swings

Despite the loss of acreage and the decline in wild fowl numbers in the region, Auglaize County Pheasants Forever members came out in full force Saturday to continue their mission.

The non-profit organization is dedicated to conserving and expanding the number of pheasants, quail and other wildlife by preserving and expanding habitat through public awareness and education and land management policies and programs.

Three-year-old donates hair to help others

Most parents document their child’s first haircut.

In the case of a 3-year-old Wapakoneta girl, her parents are using it to help others.

“I’m getting my hair cut for kids without hair,” Merecedes Wren says matter-of-factly.

The blonde-haired blue-eyed girl clinged to her uncle as she sat in the lobby, tucking her face into his neck as she shies away from strangers entering Great Clips in Wapakoneta.

School closings, roads hazardous

Wapakoneta City Schools, St. Marys City Schools and Waynesfield-Goshen Local Schools are closed today, March 25, due to snow and hazardous road conditions.

Auglaize County Sheriff Al Solomon warned motorists that roadways are snow-covered and hazardous. He requests motorists to use extreme caution while driving.

Mary Moeller, 82

March 22, 2013

Mary C. Moeller, 82, of Celina, died at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 21, 2013, at Celina Manor, due to natural causes.
She was born March 30, 1930, in Sharpsburg, the daughter of Louisa (Muhlenkamp) and Edward Feltz, who preceded her in death. On June 2, 1948, she married Louis Moeller, and he died Jan. 29, 1996.

Nichole Lyn Roether, 39

Nichole Lyn Roether, 39, of Lima, died at 12:39 p.m. Thursday, March 21, 2013, at St. Rita’s Medical Center, in Lima, surrounded by her family.
She was born March 14, 1974, in Lima. Her parents Timothy and Sherrill Satterfield Williams survive in Lima.
Nichole was a graduate of Marimor School and attended the prevocational class at Marimor Industries. Her smile was like a ray of sunshine on a cloudy day. If you were lucky she might give you one of her special hugs.

Mary Suever, 90

Mary C. Suever, 90, of Delphos, died at 5:10 a.m. Thursday, March 21, 2013, at Green Hills Center, in West Liberty.
She was born Sept. 17, 1922, in Wapakoneta, the daughter of Louise (Ziegenfilder) and Albert F. Schneider, who preceded her in death. She married Roland E. Esser, who preceded her in death in 1970. She then married Merlin “Lindy” Suever, and he preceded her in death in 1977.
