Tears rolled down Sonny Zimmerman’s mother’s face as she placed a rose at the base of the Afghanistani and Iraqi War Memorial as Zimmerman’s parents revealed his name etched on the marble facing.
U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Sonny Zimmerman, 25, died Tuesday, July 16, in Mushaka, Afghanistan, of wounds he suffered when his vehicle was attacked by a rocket propelled grenade.

Wapakoneta varsity football coach Doug Frye was tempted to throw away the game film from last Friday against Kenton but he couldn’t follow through on it.

“Even though I did think about throwing that film away, we’re a young enough football team that we need every opportunity to learn,” Frye said.

Wapakoneta ties Bath, 1-1, in heat

After trips to Lima on back to back days, the Wapakoneta Redskins will travel anywhere to find scoring opportunities right now.

On a day featuring intense heat, the Redskins tied the Bath Wildcats, 1-1, on Wednesday in a resumed game that was suspended Tuesday due to lightning.

Tuesday’s game was suspended at 22:31 left in the first half with Wapak leading 1-0.

Author spreads message of a horse’s strength

The comeback story of a race horse proved to be an inspiration for its riders and eventually a book honoring his strength.
“The Horse Who Could Do Anything” is a child’s book based on a true story of a horse owned by author Laura Klein, who has ties to Wapakoneta. Written from the horse’s point of view, the horse starts out in the pasture when a little girl tells him he can do anything.

Plant clean-up underway

Even prior to being made aware of a complaint two weeks ago from a Wapakoneta resident, city administrators contacted the manager of Koneta Rubber about his plans to clean up the open storage area to the east and north of the plant on Park Street and installing a privacy fence.

Wapakoneta maintains unbeaten record, tops LCC

The Wapakoneta Redskins won their closest match of the season Tuesday, managing a 3-2 win over the Lima Central Catholic Thunderbirds in a non-league varsity girls tennis match at the Collett Street Courts in Lima.

Wapak’s win Monday maintained the team’s undefeated record, which is now 11-0.

The Redskins won all three singles matches Tuesday, while LCC won both doubles matches each in three sets.

Wapak loses 3rd straight, defeated by Parkway

The Wapakoneta Redskins lost their third straight match Tuesday against the Parkway Panthers, 3-1, in a non-league varsity volleyball match at Wapakoneta High School.

Game scores Tuesday were 25-12, 25-22, 23-25 and 25-13.

The loss put Wapak at 6-4 overall.
