Wapakoneta's Zofkie top singles seed at sectionals

Statewide sectional tournament draws were held Sunday for the start of the Ohio High School Athletic Association girls tennis individual state championships.

The Wapakoneta Redskins will be participating in the Division I Northwest District sectional tournament Oct. 3 and 5 at Findlay.

Wapakoneta freshman Allie Zofkie is the first overall seed in the singles bracket.

Zofkie, who is undefeated as of Monday, will play Perrysburg freshman Nora Abdul-Aziz for her first match in the round of 16.

Harold J. Baumann, 75

Harold J. Baumann, 75, of Kenmore, N.Y., a retired Buffalo school teacher, died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2013, in Hospice, at the Beechwood residence.
He was the first student from Regis High School to attend Canisius College. He began his career with Sears in the credit department and then decided teaching was the job for him.
He spent 30 years with the Buffalo Board of Education as a teacher and a truant (attendance) officer. He was a member of the school masters association and the Tuesday Morning Retired Attendance Teachers Breakfast Club.

Glenna Shirley, 63

Glenna Mae Shirley, 63, of Quincy, died at 7:40 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013, at Cridersville Healthcare Center in Cridersville.
She was born March 17, 1950, in Welch, W. Va., a daughter of the late Rebecca Jane (Shepherd) and William Eli Lester.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers; Okey and Osie Lester.
She was married to Roy Shirley and he died Oct. 12, 1997.

Carolyn McCreary, 93

Carolyn McCreary, 93, of Wapakoneta, died at 10:50 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, 2013, at her residence.
She was born Dec. 22, 1919, in Lima, to Carrie (Billiter) and Edward “Butch” Nebcour. On Sept. 21, 1956, she married Carl Thomas McCreary, who preceded her in death in 1994.
Mrs. McCreary had been a housekeeper and a waitress at the Delite Cafe in the 1960s.
Survivors include a grandson, Matthew (Ciera Carpenter) McCreary, of Wapakoneta; and four great-grandchildren, Destiny McCreary, Tiah McCreary, Ayden McCreary; and Landon Miller.

Volunteers key

Auglaize County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) members continue to prepare for the possibility of a disaster and what might be needed.
New LEPC Secretary Don Jump said the volunteer Citizen Corps continues to work toward developing and tweaking a plan for a Volunteer Reception Center. The plan was tried out during a full-scale training exercise in June.
Jump said after that training, they are putting the final touches on the plan.

Cook-off winners gain ‘bragging rights’

WAYNESFIELD — Turkey Day came two months early in Waynesfield, where locals participated in their annual cook-off to see who makes the best Thanksgiving turkey.

Jury returns guilty verdict

Defense attorney Gerald Siesel argued during closing arguments Friday that the state simply had not proven beyond a reasonable doubt that Robby Barnett was present and therefore responsible for the death of 53-year-old Jeffrey Aldrich.
