Wayman earns medalist honors at Cardinal Inv.

MINSTER — Wapakoneta junior Drew Wayman shot a 1-under-par 71 to earn the honor of tournament medalist Tuesday at the Cardinal Invitational at Arrowhead Golf Club in Minster.

Wayman and the Redskins finished fourth out of 14 teams Tuesday, as the team shot 340. Wapak also finished fourth last season at the Cardinal Invitational.

Wayman had scores of 36 on the front nine and 35 on the back nine.

Wapakoneta blanks Bellefontaine in opener

The Wapakoneta Redskins blanked the Bellefontaine Chieftains, 5-0, in their first match of the season Tuesday in varsity girls tennis play. Bellefontaine brought only five players to the match at the Wapakoneta Rotary Club courts at Wapakoneta High School.

The Redskins lost only one game Tuesday.

“It was a good start,” Wapak varsity coach Mike Klock said. “They’re a weak team. I expect our competition to be much stiffer as the season goes on.”

W-G's Rumer records ace; Tigers 8th in Bellefontaine

Waynesfield-Goshen junior Kennedy Rumer aced the ninth hole Tuesday at Tree Links Golf Course in Bellefontaine during the Benjamin Logan Lady Raider Invitational. Rumer used her 6-iron on the par-3 for the hole-in-one.

The W-G Tigers placed eighth and last overall in the tournament with a score of 509.

Chelsea Spencer led W-G with an 18-hole score of 105. Rumer followed at 125. Danielle Heintz posted a 139, and Elva Anne Shephard tallied 140.

Larry Shaffer, 71

Larry Lee Shaffer, 71, of Wapakoneta, died the morning of Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013 at his home.
He was born on Oct. 18, 1941, in Auglaize County, the son of the late Myrle (Weber) and Farren Shaffer. On Jan. 30, 1965, in Westminster, he married Joyce Cummings, who passed on Nov. 8, 2010.
Larry is survived by a son, Shannon Shaffer, of Wapakoneta; two daughters, April (Ron) Barnt, of Wapakoneta, and Amber (Denny) Moran, of Wapakoneta; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Exchange student dies

A German exchange student staying with a host family in Wapakoneta was killed Tuesday on an annual rafting trip in West Virginia.
Luca Kötterheinrich, 16, was on a commercial rafting trip on the Lower New River at the Keeney Rapids, when he was ejected at approximately 2:40 p.m.
Robin Snyder, chief of visitor services for the New River Gorge National River, said Kötterheinrich was ejected from the raft along a middle rapid and hit a known undercurrent rock.

Local officials check out log jam removal on Auglaize River

Wapak opens season 6th at Piqua tourney

The Wapakoneta Redskins opened their 2013 season with a sixth-place finish out of 18 teams Monday in the Homan Invitational at Piqua Country Club in Piqua.

The Redskins totaled 349 strokes as a team.

Drew Wayman led Wapak with an 80 for 18 holes.

“Drew played steady throughout the round, as he recorded 10 pars and eight bogeys,” Wapak varsity coach Kenny Wayman said. “He hit the ball well, but the greens were the culprit for a really good round.”

WAYNESFIELD — The Wapakoneta Redskins won their first match of the season Monday as they handled the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers, 188-238, in non-league varsity girls golf action at Prairie View Golf Club in Waynesfield.

Monday’s result evened both teams’ 2013 overall records at 1-1.

The Redskins’ top four scorers each bested the Tigers’ top scorer.
