Redskins finish 12th out of 21 at Celina tournament

The Wapakoneta Redskins shot a season-high through four tournaments Friday and finished 12th out of 21 teams Thursday at the Celina Invitational in varsity boys golf action played at Fox’s Den Golf Course in Celina.

The Redskins shot 356 as a team.

Wapak varsity coach Kenny Wayman was displeased with Thursday’s result.

Wapak cruises to 5-0 win over Lima Senior

The Wapakoneta Redskins did not lose a game Friday in their 5-0 win Friday over the Lima Senior Spartans in a non-league varsity girls tennis match at the Collett Street Courts in Lima.

The win was Wapak’s second by a 5-0 score and moved the team’s record to 2-0 this season.

Recording wins in singles action Friday were Kaitlin Snider (first), Kiersten Wellons (second) and Chelsea Myers (third).

Norma Jean Hunt-Smith, 75

Norma Jean Hunt-Smith, 75, of Wapakoneta, and Okemos, Mich., went to rest in the arms of the Lord on Thursday, Aug. 8, 2013.
She was born Feb. 19, 1938, in Detroit, Mich., to Lena and Sylvester Shanklin, who preceded her in death. On Aug. 5, 1960, she married B.W. Hunt, and they shared a long, happy life until his passing on Nov. 8, 2002. Norma once again found happiness when she married her long-time family friend, John M. Smith, on July 24, 2010, and he survives.

Robert Moyler, 60

Robert “Bob” L. Moyler Jr. 60, of Cridersville passed away at 7:50 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2013 surrounded by his family at Lima Memorial Health System after a short battle with lung cancer.
He was born Feb. 8, 1953, to Frances (Van Over) and Robert L. Moyler Sr. His mother preceded him in death and his father survives in Wapakoneta. On Dec. 8, 1984, he married Dawn M. Laffin, who survives in Cridersville.

Utility rates to go up

CRIDERSVILLE — Residents can expect an increase of $5 on water and sewer combined utility bills starting on September’s billing period.
The decision to increase the cost was made during a regular meeting of the Cridersville Village Council this week.
Cridersville Village Administrator Jarid Kohlrieser said residents will pay $30.23 with the increase, while anyone outside of the corporation who receives Cridersville water and sewer utilities will pay $43.79.

Drive Sober campaign under way

Local law enforcement agencies are again partnering for a national campaign, which starts this weekend, to promote sober driving.

Redskins to preview spread offense Saturday

The Wapakoneta Redskins’ football preview Saturday against Findlay and Tiffin Columbian will truly be a preview.

After all, Findlay and Columbian each run spread offenses, which Wapak will go against in each of its first three regular season games this season, against Bellefontaine, Kenton and Elida.

The Redskins will head to Donnell Stadium in Findlay on Saturday for a 10 a.m. scrimmage against the Findlay Trojans and the Columbian Tornadoes.

Kohler, Wapak place 4th at Defiance tournament

Shelby Kohler and the Wapakoneta Redskins each placed fourth Thursday in the Defiance Lady Bulldog Golf Invitational in varsity girls golf play at Eagle Rock Golf Club in Defiance.

The Redskins totaled 423 shots Thursday.

After shooting an 88 for 18 holes, Kohler settled for fourth place overall after losing a tiebreaker for third-place medalist. She lost on the second playoff hole.

Wapak to run on state meet course

The Wapakoneta Redskins cross country teams will head to the site of the Ohio High School Athletic Association state championships Saturday to compete in the OHSAA Early Season Invitational at National Trail Raceway in Hebron.

The invitational is Wapak’s first regular season event of the 2013 season.
Wapak’s boys team will compete at 1:50 p.m. Saturday in Section F, one of four scored boys races, while the Redskins girls squad will race at 4:20 p.m. Saturday in Section H, one of four scored girls races.
