Darlene Kohler, 84

Darlene “Dottie” Kohler, 84, of Wapakoneta, died at 11:40 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 25, 2013, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.
She was born on April 15, 1929, in Minster, to Marie (Vanderhorst) and Reuben Conrad Peter Braun, who preceded her in death. On Nov. 11, 1949, she married Lawrence “Spike” Kohler, who survives in Wapakoneta.

Zita Earl, 84

Zita Vogl Earl, 84, of Waynesfield, died at 7:21 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25, 2013, at Lima Memorial Health System.
Zita was born May 18, 1929, in Routhenbach, Germany, to Babette (Buettner) and Ludwig Vogl. On July 17, 1948, in Nurnberg, Germany, she married Faris “Fuzzy” Earl, and he preceeded her in death on Feb. 12, 2013.

Election picture clears in Uniopolis

UNIOPOLIS — The village of Uniopolis has appeared to have dodged at least one crisis as the November general election approaches.
Mayor Greg Ritchie filed his petition Monday with Auglaize County Board of Elections to run for the expiring mayoral seat. He filed shortly before the 4 p.m. deadline.
Ritchie formerly had been a member of the village council and served as its president. Ritchie took over the mayor position in December after Bill Rolston resigned from the post.

New capacity charge for water usage sent to council

City water consumers will not see a 5 percent increase on their bill starting Jan. 1 if Wapakoneta City Council passes planned legislation based on a recommendation from the Utilities Committee.

With millions of dollars from a fund spent to rebuild and upgrade the city’s electric system coupled with stagnant revenue, Wapakoneta City Council members discussed possible solutions to raise money for the Electric Expansion Fund with their utility consultant.

Redskins post 2nd straight win, 3-1, over Sidney

The Wapakoneta Redskins posted back-to-back wins after a 3-1 victory Monday over the Sidney Yellow Jackets in non-league varsity volleyball action, with the match’s scores being 25-21, 25-16, 22-25 and 25-23.

The win moved Wapak to 2-1 overall this season.

The Redskins hounded the net Monday, as Lea Stoner had 19 blocks and Josie Miller notched 15 blocks.

“We definitely had a nice block game tonight,” Wapak varsity coach Amy Ruppert said Monday. “Those are huge numbers.”

Wapak shuts out Bath, 5-0, in WBL

The Wapakoneta Redskins remained unbeaten Monday with a 5-0 win over the Bath Wildkittens in a Western Buckeye League varsity girls tennis match.

The win moved Wapak to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the WBL this season.

The Redskins won all five matches in two sets and lost only four games in the entire match Monday.

At first singles, Kaitlin Snyder blanked Dana Wieging, 6-0, 6-0. Allie Zofkie shut out Madison Pauff, 6-0, 6-0, in second singles. Rachel Roberts handled Maddie Helmig, 6-2, 6-0, at third singles.

Botkins falls to New Bremen, 3-1

BOTKINS — For a brief time, Botkins controlled Monday’s match against New Bremen, but elsewhere mistakes by the Trojans were too much to overcome in their 3-1 loss to the visiting Cardinals in non-league varsity volleyball play Monday.

New Bremen took the match in four games with scores of 25-13, 21-25, 25-17 and 25-16.

“This is a tough team,” Botkins varsity coach Bryan Trego said about New Bremen. “There’s no shame losing to them. They play a lot of tough teams throughout the year.”

W-G still winless after 3-1 loss to Jefferson

Waynesfield-Goshen first-year varsity coach Caitlin Klima said Monday was the best her team had played all season, and her players said it’s the best the program has played in a while.

The W-G Tigers lost a close 3-1 match to the Jefferson Wildcats on Monday in a non-league varsity volleyball match in Delphos, as Jefferson claimed the match win by scores of 25-18, 25-23, 21-25 and 25-15.

W-G is still winless this season through three matches.

Botkins golfers dominate tri-match

The Botkins Trojans dominated a tri-match Monday, using their team score of 169 to defeat Riverside’s 221 and Calvary Christian’s 238 in varsity boys golf action at Cherokee Hills Golf Course in Bellefontaine.

Roger Miller paced the Trojans with a 38 to earn match medalist honors. Josh Miller (42), Nick Okuley (44) and Spencer Stutsman (45) finished Botkins’ scoring.

Riverside was led by Landon Kelsey’s 45.

Peter Duffman paced Calvary Christian with a 54.
