‘Take precaution’

With many area students returning to school next week, area law enforcement officers are reminding motorists to watch for buses and children waiting for them.
Rural areas are always potential problem areas, especially on state routes, where speeds tend to be higher and stopping distances are increased, said Lt. Scott Carrico, commander of the Wapakoneta Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP).
He said Ohio 501 and Ohio 198 are to be a focus throughout the month of August until after school starts.

Redskins make season debut in scrimmage

FINDLAY — The Wapakoneta Redskins received their first sense of an opposing force Saturday in their scrimmage of the 2013 season, as Wapak traveled to Findlay on Saturday morning to scrimmage against the Findlay Trojans and the Tiffin Columbian Tornadoes.

The Redskins scored two touchdowns against Columbian and allowed one touchdown to each team in the live down-and-distance session in the latter half of the scrimmage Saturday.

Wapak varsity coach Doug Frye graded his team’s performance Saturday.

Garman throws scoreless rehab inning

Wapakoneta native Brian Garman returned to the mound Sunday for the first time since June 22.

He started Sunday’s game for the Arizona Rookie League Brewers and pitched one scoreless inning.

“I felt pretty good,” Garman said. “As far as getting to the point where I was before I got hurt, I just need to see more hitters.

“I’m pretty comfortable physically. I’m not concerned,” he said. “I just need more repetitions off the mound.”

Shorthanded Redskins beat Ottoville, 4-1, in opener

The Wapakoneta Redskins opened their regular season with a 4-1 win Saturday over the Ottoville Big Green in a non-league varsity girls soccer game in Ottoville.

Wapak senior Mackenzie Custer manufactured two of the team’s four goals Saturday, while senior Sara Warner and sophomore Brianna Pequignot each had one goal.

Wapak boys 9th in state course meet

The Wapakoneta Redskins recorded a 9th-place finish out of 21 teams Saturday in Section F of the OHSAA Early Season Invitational in boys cross country action.

The invitational was held at National Trail Raceway in Hebron on the site of the OHSAA cross country championships. Races were divided into sections based on size of schools competing.

In 34th place, Wapak sophomore Dylan Plaugher was the team’s first finisher Saturday, completing the course with a time of 18 minutes, 28.19 seconds.

Zofkie places 10th; Wapak 16th out of 17

Wapakoneta freshman Allie Zofkie garnered a 10th-place finish Saturday in Section H of the OHSAA Early Season Invitational in girls cross country competition. Zofkie was the Wapakoneta Redskins’ first finisher with a time of 20 minutes, 30.38 seconds.

The invitational was held at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, the site of the OHSAA cross country state championships.

Wapak finished 16th out of 17 teams in Section H with 402 points.

Bonnie Lutterbeck, 54

Bonnie (Ayers) Lutterbeck, 54, of St. Marys, died at 5:21 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16, 2013, at her parent’s home.
She was born Feb. 10, 1959, in Decatur, Ind., to Jeanette (Winkler) and Jim Ayers, who survive in St. Marys.
Also surviving are two sons, Jason Stienecker, of Wapakoneta, and Corey Lutterbeck, of St. Marys; and a daughter, Amber Lutterbeck, of St. Marys.
Services are at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Cisco Funeral Home in St. Marys, with the Revs. Steve Weatherly and Tim Smith officiating. Burial is to follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens in St. Marys.

Shirley Motter, 69

Shirley A. Motter, 69, of Waynesfield, passed away Friday afternoon, August 16, 2013 at Lima Memorial Hospital.
Shirley was born Feb. 25, 1944, in Celina, to the late Fredonia (Schnelle) and Gerhard Leugers.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Jim and Gary Jr.
