Wapak opens season 6th at Piqua tourney

The Wapakoneta Redskins opened their 2013 season with a sixth-place finish out of 18 teams Monday in the Homan Invitational at Piqua Country Club in Piqua.

The Redskins totaled 349 strokes as a team.

Drew Wayman led Wapak with an 80 for 18 holes.

“Drew played steady throughout the round, as he recorded 10 pars and eight bogeys,” Wapak varsity coach Kenny Wayman said. “He hit the ball well, but the greens were the culprit for a really good round.”

WAYNESFIELD — The Wapakoneta Redskins won their first match of the season Monday as they handled the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers, 188-238, in non-league varsity girls golf action at Prairie View Golf Club in Waynesfield.

Monday’s result evened both teams’ 2013 overall records at 1-1.

The Redskins’ top four scorers each bested the Tigers’ top scorer.

Margaret Kantner, 87

Margaret L. Kantner, 87, of Wapakoneta, died at 12:15 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2013, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.
Arrangements are incomplete at Schlosser Funeral Home & Cremation Services, in Wapakoneta.

New Bremen defeats W-G

The Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers were defeated by the New Bremen Cardinals, 171-186, on Monday in a non-league varsity boys golf match at Prairie View Golf Club in Waynesfield.

The loss was W-G’s first of the season, moving the Tigers to 1-1 overall.

Trey Crumrine led W-G with a 41. Also for the Tigers, Lake Turner and Gabe Wilcox each had a 47, while Drew Lament notched a 51.

New Bremen’s Alex Britton was the match medalist with a nine-hole score of 38.

Freda Randall, 88

Freda Pauline Randall, 88, of Wapakoneta, died at 9:40 a.m. Monday, Aug. 12, at Auglaize Acres Nursing Home in Wapakoneta.
She was born June 8, 1925, in Lima to Carl and Ida Shroyer Walti, who preceded her in death. She married Carlton Wilson Randall Sept. 5, 1947 and he preceded her in death Sept. 20, 1995.
Mrs. Randall had been a homemaker and attended Voice of Victory Methodist Church.

Larry Shaffer, 71

Larry Lee Shaffer, 71, of Wapakoneta, died the morning of Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013 at his home.
He was born on Oct. 18, 1941, in Auglaize County, the son of the late Myrle (Weber) and Farren Shaffer. On Jan. 30, 1965, in Westminster, he married Joyce Cummings, who passed on Nov. 8, 2010.
Larry is survived by a son, Shannon Shaffer, of Wapakoneta; two daughters, April (Ron) Barnt, of Wapakoneta, and Amber (Denny) Moran, of Wapakoneta; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Dogs now taken to Allen County

After the collapse of a building at the temporary rented facilities the Auglaize County dog warden was operating out of, all recovered dogs are now being cared for in Allen County.
“All dogs are going straight to Allen County now,” Auglaize County Dog Warden Russ Bailey told the Wapakoneta Daily News.

Botkins 3rd at league preview

The Botkins Trojans took third place Monday at the Shelby County Athletic League preview in varsity boys golf action.

The Trojans tallied 357 as a team Monday.

Nick Okuley led Botkins with an 86 for 18 holes.

Seth Hanna carded an 89 to finish second for the Trojans. Spencer Stutsman and Josh Miller each scored 91 to complete Botkins’ scoring.

Russia was the preview winner at 331, followed by runner-up Anna at 342.

Russia’s Austin Tebbe was the low scorer in the preview at 74.

Rollback to end for taxes
