Charles Rhoades, 88

Charles Arthur “Charlie” Rhoades, 88, 137 Lawton Street, Greenwood, S.C., husband of Elinore Mae Ankerman Rhoades, died Wednesday, July 24, 2013, at Hospice House.
Born in Wapakoneta, he was a son of the late Gladys (Keiber) and Glen Rhoades.

Wapakoneta city legislators have opted for an executive order instead of recommending passage of legislation regarding a smoking ban at city parks.

Members of two Wapakoneta City Council committees — Health and Safety and Parks and Recreation — decided this week an ordinance regarding a ban on smoking at all city parks is unnecessary as long as signs are posted telling people to refrain from the activity, Councilor-at-large Randy Fisher told the Wapakoneta Daily News on Wednesday.

Brown seeks more oversight of banks

In light of Wall Street banks allegedly manipulating the costs of commodities paid by manufacturers and ultimately consumers, a U.S. legislator from Ohio wants the Federal Reserve to flex its regulatory muscle to help eliminate these anti-competitive practices.

Democratic U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, of Ohio, says he and other Congressional members will call for additional hearings in the future and they intend to pressure federal officials to use their influence to make the marketplace more competitive.

Two teachers resign, two hired

Classified contract OK’d

Wapakoneta City Schools Board of Education members approved Tuesday a two-year contract between the school district and its classified staff.
The contract with the Wapakoneta Classified Association (WCA) is in effect from July 1, 2013, through June 30, 2015, and implements seven changes from the previous contract. The district employs approximately 120 classified employees.
The contract was approved 4-to-0, with board member Ron Mertz abstaining, during Tuesday’s board meeting.

Buckland readies levy for ballot

BUCKLAND — During a second special meeting in as many weeks, Buckland Village Council members had the final reading of an ordinance to place a 5-year, 3-mill property levy for fire and emergency services put on the November ballot.
