R. W. “Wes” Orphal, 66, of Cape Coral, Fla., formerly of Wapakoneta, and Fort Wayne, Ind., died at 7:40 a.m. Saturday, July 27, 2013, at Hope Hospice, Cape Coral, Fla.
Arrangements are incomplete at the Bayliff & Eley Funeral Home in Wapakoneta.

Marilyn Ann Haley, 79, died Monday, July 22, 2013.
She was the beloved mother of James (Sally), Jeffrey (Gary Vance), Jill (Gary) Alred, John (Susan), and the late Jane Zemaiduk. She was the dear grandmother of Jacqueline, Jennifer, Jessica, James, Austin, Corinne and Bill and the loving great-grandmother of Charles, Chelsea, Victoria, Catherina, Ethan, Evan, Madison, William, Elizabeth, Brianna, Kailee, Macy and Jesse.

Wilma Wells, 97

Wilma J. (Shaw) Wells, 97, 3003 W. Cisco Road, Sidney, passed away at 11:50 a.m. Friday, July 26, 2013, at the Dorothy Love Retirement Community in Sidney.
She was born on Sept. 14, 1915, in Wapakoneta, the daughter of the late Louella (Metz) and Marvin Shaw.
In 1953, she married Wayne Wells, who preceded her in death in 2000.
She is survived by a sister-in-law, Mary Heil; nine nieces and nephews, Junior Shaw, Jean Ellen McKinley, Dr. Darlene Shaw, Tom Shaw, Susan Deeter, Linda Freeman, June Harrison, Doug Burdette, and Wayne Burdette; and many good friends.

Georgeanna Winget, 99

Georgeanna Winget, 99, of Wapakoneta, died at 4:30 a.m. Saturday, July 27, 2013, at Lima Memorial Health System.
She was born July 23, 1914, in Lima, the daughter of Iona (Betz) and Edward Penn. In 1956, she married Robert Winget, and he died in 1968.
Survivors include two daughters, Constance Sprague, of Coquille, Ore., and Linda (Dick) Watt, of Wapakoneta; a step-daughter, Susan (John) Jackson, of Lima; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Tied to teaching: Diane Dillman Elshire leaves her mark on students

A  retired English teacher who spent 39 years teaching at Wapakoneta City Schools said she felt a calling to teach.

“I knew I wanted to be an English teacher since I was in the eighth grade,” said Diane Dillman Elshire, who retired at the end of the school year. “It was always my favorite subject.”

Flagman visits W'field to help with Zimmerman memorial

WAYNESFIELD — Many people know him simply as the “Flag Man.”

Larry Eckhardt, of Little York, Ill., has spent the last seven years traveling from town to town across the United States helping people honor their fallen soldiers. 

Eckhardt was in the village of Waynesfield Friday with 2,380 flags to place along the path from Waynesfield-Goshen High School where the viewing for U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Sonny Zimmerman was held Friday and services are to be held today at 11 a.m.

Breastfeeding Week starts with mobile unit at fair

A mobile breastfeeding unit is to be at the Auglaize County Fair to help promote World Breastfeeding Week, Thursday through Aug. 7.

The Ohio Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) unit is essentially a clinic on wheels with a waiting room that accommodates six clients and room for four to five staff members. The unit is to be placed at the fairgrounds Sunday through Wednesday.

Waynesfield fallen U.S. soldier makes final trip home

WAYNESFIELD — Hundreds of people turned out and lined the roadways leading into Waynesfield to pay final tribute to a fallen soldier who was killed in action in Afghanistan.
Sonny Zimmerman, of Waynesfield, died on July 16 in Mushaka, Afghanistan, from wounds he suffered when the vehicle he was in was struck by a rocket propelled grenade.
He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team out of Fort Campbell, Ky. The unit is better known as the Band of Brothers.
