FFA ‘exceptional year’

On Thursday, Wapakoneta FFA members and parents, numbering more than 400, honored Wapakoneta High School students  involved in the agricultural program at the high school during the organization’s annual banquet.

Wapakoneta FFA advisers Ron Brown and Chris Turner handed out awards in a number of different categories.

“This was an exceptional year,” Brown said. “I can remember when I first started, we had 32 people in FFA. This year, we are graduating 34 seniors alone. It shows the program is growing.”

Buckland back-up

BUCKLAND — A back-up generator for the proposed wastewater treatment plant is likely to come to the village of Buckland free of charge, courtesy of the U.S. military.

Buckland Police Chief Randy Trayer informed Buckland Mayor Dan Lambert that he is permitted to use the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), a government agency used for the procurement of extra military equipment including guns and equipment.  Military operations primarily use the agency, but state and local governments also are permitted to use the DLA for safety services.

Fourth-grader ‘erupts’ to top of W-G spelling bee

WAYNESFIELD — Winning the school spelling bee once during an academic career would be quite an accomplishment.

Graham Knerr, 9, of Waynesfield-Goshen Local Schools, says he would like to go for a clean sweep.

Knerr, a fourth-grader, knocked out 19 other students to win the Waynesfield-Goshen School spelling bee and to qualify for the regional competition to be held in Lima March 23.

He won the competition by first spelling “humility,” and then following it up by spelling “eruption” to take home the title.

David W. Schaub, 71, of Botkins, died at 5:45 p.m. Thursday, March 14, 2013, at Wapakoneta Manor.

Mary Mitchell, 92

March 15, 2013

Mary Susan Mitchell, 92, of rural Lima, died Thursday morning, March 14, 2013, at her daughter’s home west of Lima.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Thomas E. Bayliff Funeral Home in Spencerville.
Arrangements are incomplete at the funeral home.

Albert Freytag, 87

Albert F. Freytag, 87, 2233 State Route 362, Minster, died at 10:23 a.m. Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at Joint Township Memorial Hospital in St. Marys.
He was born Nov. 21, 1925, in Fort Loramie, to the late Amelia (Boerger) and Albert Freytag. On June 12, 1948, at St. Michael Catholic Church, Fort Loramie, he married Marjorie M. “Marj” DeLaet, and she survives in Minster.
Also surviving are four children, Marge Jones, of Loveland, Dr. Thomas R. Freytag, of Wapakoneta, William J. Freytag, of Botkins and Joseph R. Freytag, of Minster.
He was preceded in death by son, Albert F. Freytag.

Doyle Lhamon, 88

Doyle M. Lhamon, 88, 875 Meadow Lane, St. Marys, died Thursday March 14, 2013, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys.
He was born May 14, 1924,, in Marion, to Magdalena (Loegel) and Clarence Lhamon. He was first married to Doris M. Howell, who died July 19, 1975. He later married Mary Elizabeth Fiebelkorn, who survives.

Helen Elsass, 91

Helen Elsass, 91, formerly of Kettering, passed away on Sunday, March 10, 2013.
Helen was born Oct. 28, 1921, in Auglaize County, to the late Sophia (Pulfer) and Philip Helmlinger, who preceded her in death.
She is survived by a daughter, Kay Breece, of London, Ohio; a son and daughter-in-law, Merle (Sherrie) Elsass, of San Antonio, Texas; six grandchildren: Megan Breece, Greg Breece, Erin Elsass, Ashley Elsass, Josh Elsass, and Caitlin Elsass; three great-grandchildren, Hudson, Holden and Jackson; a brother, Harold Helmlinger; and daughter-in-law, Sandy Elsass.

Wayne Binkley, 66

March 15, 2013

Wayne L. Binkley, 66, of Merrillville, Ind., passed away peacefully Thursday, March 7,2013, at Methodist Hospital Southlake.
Wayne was born Feb. 24, 1947, in Lima, to Ruby (Kantner) and Don Binkley. On Feb. 21, 1970, he married Patricia nee Halaschak, and she survives.
