Strip-tilled fared better when droughts hits, starts early

During Wednesday’s presentations at the 21st annual Conservation Tillage and Technology Conference held at Ohio Northern University in Ada, a Purdue University professor addressed farmers on improving drought tolerance for crops.

Tony Vyn, who specializes in agronomy at Purdue University, along with a group of other researchers, conducts  research on developing drought-resistant crops in the United States.

Brown unveils 3-point plan

Democratic U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown says his three-point prescription drug reform plan should save lives and money.

During a media teleconference, Brown outlined Wednesday his health reform bill to lower prescription drug costs for consumers, especially for senior citizens on government health insurance — and by doing lowering drug costs it should also reduce the federal deficit because the government would be able to pay less for needed medications.

Four new troopers join post

Four new troopers are joining the Wapakoneta Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP).

The troopers are to take the places of other new troopers who joined the post late last year, as they have gotten assignments closer to their  homes, Wapakoneta Post Commander Lt. Scott Carrico said.

The local post is expecting to gain a fifth new trooper from the next graduating class in April, to replace another trooper leaving in September. The four other troopers are scheduled to leave at the end of May.

The WDN is pretty proud to report we received two nominations in the Ohio Associated Press Newspaper Awards program: one for best sports columnist, Thomas Bradley; and for our special "Wink at the Moon" section published following the death of Neil Armstrong. Winners will be announced later this year.

Snow, ice hammer area

A snow storm that dumped more than 7 inches of snow on the region snarled morning traffic, closed area schools and forced residents throughout Auglaize County to dig out of what could be the season’s last storm.

Auglaize County EMA Director Troy Anderson said he measured between 7 and 8 inches of snow throughout Auglaize County. Drifts can top 3 feet.

Hometown Opportunity looking to expand

Auglaize County economic development directors, working in collaboration with Mercer County economic development officials, are looking for ways to expand their services.

Hometown Opportunity, which started as a website, HometownOpportunity.com, in the fall, seeks to pair job hunters — no matter where they may be — with county and area employers.

CDBG funds wanted

Waynesfield Village Administrator Fred Rowe and Fanning-Howey and Associates adviser Craig Mescher met with the Auglaize County commissioners Tuesday to discuss the possibility of funding neighborhood revitalization programs in Waynesfield with Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds that the county will receive later this year.

Snow delays, cancels classes

Wapakoneta City Schools closed today, March 6, due to inclement weather.

Other schools closed due to inclement weather includes Botkins Local Schools, St. Marys City Schools, and Waynesfield-Goshen Local Schools.
