Optimists donate to Support Campaign

The Wapakoneta Optimist Club helped kick off the YMCA's annual support campaign last week with a $1,200 donation! Presenting the check is Optimist Terry Blosser; accepting the check are Y campaign representative Van Wright and YMCA CEO Josh Little.

Redskins fall to Coldwater at home

The Wapakoneta girls basketball team came out of the gate sluggish against the Coldwater Cavaliers Tuesday night.

The Cavaliers had a handle on offense and defense, and found ways to score inside seemingly at will, as the Redskins fell to the Cavaliers, 57-47

Dorothy Bowersock, 82

Dorothy A. Bowersock, 82, of rural Wapakoneta, died at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013, at her residence.
Arrangements are incomplete at the Bayliff & Eley Funeral Home in Wapakoneta.

Chester Young, 86

February 6, 2013

Chester “Chet” Neil Young, 86, of Lakeview, died at 5:45a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013, at Shawnee Manor in Lima.
He was born March 30, 1926, in Amanda, the son of Ethel and Oscar Young. On Aug. 16, 1947, he married Dorothy Maxine Zimmerman, and she preceded him in death on Nov. 23, 2000.
Surviving are two sons, Eddie Young, of Lima, and Tommy Lynn Young, of Napoleon.
He was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Owen Young.

Loren Gierhart, 93

Loren Olen ‘Bud’ Gierhart, 93, of Lima, formerly of Wapakoneta, died at at 12:11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013, at Wyngate Senior Living Community in Lima.
He was born June 2, 1919, in Union Township, Auglaize County, the son of the late Nancy Ella (Bacome) and Clarence Webster Gierhart. On Sept. 15, 1993, he married D. Jeanette Stotts Bartlett Gierhart, who died Jan. 1, 2013.

Norma Boerder, 63

Norma Jean Boerder, 63, of Wapakoneta, died at 8:50 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013, at Auglaize Acres Nursing Home in Wapakoneta.
She was born May 1, 1949, in Dallas, the daughter of Vondale (Bosh) and Frank J. Boerder.
Surviving are two sisters, Dolores (Steven) White, of Mount Clemens, Mich., and Loretta Bartlett, of Cridersville; two half-brothers, William (Julie) Boerder, of North Platte, Neb., and Eugene (Alice) Boerder, of Dallas; and five nieces and nephews, Dawn White, Denise White, Brett Bartlett, Bradd Bartlett and Natalee Bartlett.

Walter Drexler, 88

Walter L. Drexler, 88, of Wapakoneta, died at 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013, at Auglaize Acres in Wapakoneta.
He was born Nov. 12, 1924, in Wapakoneta, the eldest son of Marie and Anthony Drexler, who preceded him in death. On Feb. 23, 1949, he married Ellen V. Drexler, and she preceded him in death in September of 2012.

Dog shelter expected to cost less

The Auglaize County commissioners hope to save at least $150,000 with the latest proposed plans for a county dog shelter.

Commissioner John Bergman said these new savings could help ensure that the building is completed and in use by the end of November.

He described a meeting Tuesday with architects from the Minster firm of Garmann-Miller & Associates as going better than anticipated as two cost-saving buildings were proposed.

“Some concepts were put together so we could get an idea of what we could save,” Bergman said.

Essays written from the heart

While pouring their hearts into words and putting the words onto paper, three seniors were named top winners of an essay contest.

Wapakoneta High School seniors Ross Kohler, Nicole Brown and Joe Schneider were named third, fourth and fifth place winners in the “Laws of Life” contest at the high school.

This essay is an writing project their teacher, Linda Temple, assigned, and the object was to write about something near and dear to them, and that is exactly what Kohler did.

Auglaize Acres union holds vigil

Union workers from Auglaize Acres, joined by family members of residents and friends, held a candlelight vigil Tuesday evening outside the Auglaize County Administration Building praying for a resolution to contract talks.

Battling a breeze to keep their candles lit, Susan Elliott, who serves on the executive board for the Auglaize Acres bargaining unit, led the group as they gathered along South Blackhoof Street.
