Richard D. Kennedy, 72, of Sarasota, Fla., formerly of Wapakoneta, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, at his residence on Longboat Key, Fla.
He was born to Amelia C. (Dorsten) and Richard B. Kennedy
He is survived by a son Richard Scott.
He was preceded in death by a son, Steven Daryl Kennedy.
A celebration of life service will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 2, at Shawnee Country Club in Lima.

DARE gives to children’s hospital

Selling candy and carnations to fellow students allowed the Wapakoneta Middle School DARE Council to make a difference in the lives of children battling life-threatening illness.
From the sales of candy bars at Christmas and carnations and candy for Valentine’s Day, the DARE Council was able to raise $1,000, which officers of the club presented Monday to Debbie Butner, manager of the Children’s Miracle Network, at the Dayton Children’s Hospital.

Musical roots for anthem singer

A local sixth-grader says she comes from a musical family — and notes music is her passion.
Wapakoneta Middle School student Hope Johns recently had the opportunity to perform in front of hundreds of people, as she sung the National Anthem at the last two home Wapakoneta High School boys basketball games, prior to the last game of the season on Friday.
“I was nervous, but I knew I could do it though,” Hope said. “Without music I wouldn’t have a life. It’s what I do.”

Razing a problem

A Wapakoneta City Council member is questioning the fiscal soundness of the city spending money from the general fund to help raze structures in 2012 to take advantage of state grants to eliminate slum and blight.
Wapakoneta 1st Ward Councilor Jim Neumeier learned this week the breakdown of city dollars spent to help raze four structures in 2012, beyond the $40,000 grant used to actually tear down the structures.

In swimming, Wapakoneta High School sophomore Josie Miller finished 5th at state in the 50-yard freestyle with a time 24.03.

After one game, Zach bowled a 235, Zerrick Brannan bowled a 166, Chandler Kaeck bowled a 179, Nathan Kaeck bowled a 166, Austin Krites bowled a 173 for a team total of 919.

Man shot

ST. JOHNS — A 30-year-old man was reportedly shot in the chest at a home on Weimert Road this morning. He was transported by St. Johns EMS to a hospital in Lima.

Redskin sophomore earns fifth seed in 50 freestyle at state tournament

After the preliminary round of the Ohio state swimming tournament one Wapakoneta Redskin swimmer has made it to day two of competition.

Wapakoneta High School sophomore Josie Miller swam her 50-yard freestyle in a time of 24.29 seconds to earn the fifth seed in the event for the Friday finals.

Macie McNichols of Gilmour High School grabbed the top seed in the race with a time of 23.36.

Chili Day: ‘Tasty’

Standing in front of a vat of chili, Sertoma member Denny Kemper continues to stir what is the last batch for the day as the clock ticks toward the end of the Sertoma Chili Day on Thursday.

“We went with a couple of extra batches right off the bat and it is paying off,” Kemper said, explaining the group made approximately 140 gallons of chili this year. “It is going fast this year. We used to have to mix a couple of batches at the last minute, but I think we will be just right this year. We are right on target with what we served last year.”

Drivers failure to yield

Motorists running stop signs and failing to yield the right of way to other traffic on the road are causing too many crashes, state law enforcement officials say.

Failure-to-yield violations were the second-highest cause of fatal crashes throughout Ohio in 2012, according to statistics from the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP). Locally, a motorist’s failure to yield the right of way led to one of Auglaize County’s six fatalities in 2012. The mishap occurred at the intersection of Ohio 117 and Fairmount Road.
