Box Tops for iPads

For two Wapakoneta Elementary School students, they spent part of their holiday break practicing math problems — and they were excited about doing them because a new Christmas present made it fun.

Sisters Audrey and Hanna Sparks used their iPads over the holidays to hone their skills in mathematics. They also can use them for language arts and history as well as other subjects.

Wilker state queen

ST. MARYS — A member of Auglaize County Junior Fair royalty now has a new crown to add to her collection.

University of Dayton freshman Sarah Wilker took home the title of Ohio Fairs Queen for 2013 following a competition during the first week of January in Columbus. Wilker qualified for the event when she was named the 2012 Auglaize County Junior Fair queen in July.

Area woman needs heart, local man a hero

For the typical person turning 21, their birthday is a day of celebration as they enter the next phase of adulthood.

For Botkins native Rachel Doseck, she had to celebrate her 21st birthday on Sunday in the Intensive Care Unit at the Cleveland Clinic on the hospital’s transplant list.

Giving 'Kash for Kibera'

Eighth-graders at Wapakoneta High School are working together to make a change in how students 8,000 miles away are learning.

“We’re trying to raise money to make a school,” Kacey Gerlach said.

She and a friend, Lacey Hayes, said they were touched by seeing all the pictures of young children in Africa who need their help.

The girls, who are helping to advertise for a drive to raise money to build a school in Africa, said they want to bring in as much money as possible.

Buckland considers income tax

BUCKLAND — A new tax will soon be coming to Buckland residents. And village leaders would like to have another tax generating income.

Buckland Village Council members approved Thursday the first reading of an ordinance establishing a 1 percent income tax to residents.

Betty Verneil Shepperd Keim, 86

Betty Vernell Shepperd Keim, 86, of Bellefontaine, passed away Thursday morning, Jan. 10, 2013, at Logan Acres Care Center, in Bellefontaine.

Betty was born on April 18, 1926, in Gas City, Ind., the daughter of the late Nellie Hewitt and Cloyd “Happy” Clark. On Sept. 18, 1945, she married Keith A. Keim, in Gas City, and he preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Ronald Shepperd, and brother-in-law, Glenn Keim.

Sixth-grader confesses to writing bomb threat

A sixth-grade Wapakoneta City Schools student confessed to writing a note on a school desk Thursday which led to the evacuation of Wapakoneta Middle School.

Wapakoneta Police Chief Russ Hunlock said through an officer’s investigation a student of interest was identified and interviewed. During the interview, an 11-year-old girl confessed to leaving the note.

School officials have confirmed the girl did not have access to a bomb or materials to make one. The case has been forwarded to prosecutors with the Auglaize County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

Young artists in spotlight

A local art gallery is gearing up for an annual art show — one that members say is rewarding for everyone involved.

The Riverside Art Center’s fifth annual Children’s Art Exhibit is currently being set up, and the opening reception will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Jan. 19, and a member says its one of the Riverside Art Center’s favorite shows of the year.

GED program changes in 2014

A new GED test will be starting in 2014, and an area instructor encourages all who are considering to take the test to do so now.

“This test is going to be much harder and more expensive,” West Central Ohio ABLE-GED Program instructor Candice Dicke said. “We would like the people in Wapakoneta to be aware that the last time you will be able to take the old test will be the summer of 2013.”

The current GED test is multiple choice and essay questions. It consists of five parts, and once a part is passed it will not have to be taken again.

Betty V. Keim, 88, of Bellefontaine, passed away Jan. 10, 2013, at Logan Acres Care Center in Bellefontaine.
Services are at 4 p.m. Sunday at Shoffstall Funeral Home in Lakeview.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Other arrangements are incomplete at the funeral home.
