Paul A. Wilges, 78

Paul A. Wilges, 78, of Wapakoneta, died at 10:50 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013, at his residence following a sudden illness. He was born Dec. 31, 1934, in Wapakoneta, the son of Herman and Emma (Bishop) Wilges, who preceded him in death. On Aug. 10, 1958, he married Marilyn W. Binkley, and she survives.
Other survivors include, a son, Kevin Wilges, of Wapakoneta; a daughter, Karen (Bill) Jacobs, of Wapakoneta; three grandchildren, Bill Jacobs III, Brandon Schreiber, and Jessica Jacobs; a brother, Richard Wilges; a sister, Donna Richardson; numerous nieces and nephews.

Garman faces surgery, year recovery

“I’m just excited for this baseball season, and I’m not even going to throw a ball.”

Brian Garman, recently released by the Milwaukee Brewers, will soon undergo surgery to repair his labrum.

The operation will shelve him for one year.

In the mean time, the Wapakoneta native is going to be in town for during his rehab process.

While snow and ice blanketed the region, a sport played exclusively outside on local fields was being practiced by kids inside this weekend, as the 4th Annual Brian Garman Pitching Camp was held Saturday and Sunday at Wapakoneta Elementary School.

The two-day camp for youth in grade 3-12 was hosted by Wapakoneta native Brian Garman, a professional pitcher in MLB’s minor leagues.

Garman, a 2006 graduate of Wapakoneta High School, explained some takeaways he hopes the youngsters retrieve after all of the camp’s instruction.

'Skins, Selvey lands 1st win in victory over Minster

After giving up the lead briefly to start the second half, the Wapakoneta Redskins quickly rebounded and closed out the Minster Wildcats in a tight ball game Saturday, giving first-year coach Doug Selvey his first win with the Redskins.

After leading virtually the entire first half, Wapak quickly regained the lead and held onto it the rest of the game in a 53-48 victory Saturday over Minster in the Wapakoneta High School gymnasium.

Anna L. Shockey Henry, 88

Anna L. Shockey Henry, 88, of Marietta and formerly of Lima, died at 9:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013, at Worthington Nursing Home in Parkersburg, W.Va. 
She was born April 9, 1925, in South Bend, Ind. to John and Marie (Burden) Shockey, who preceded her in death. She married Robert F. Henry Oct. 31, 1943, and he preceded her in death March 2, 2013.
Mrs. Henry had been a member of Shawnee Community Church, Shawnee Garden Club, YWCA, Allen County Senior Citizens, a Gray Lady at St. Rita’s the Twenties Club and enjoyed bowling and quilting.

Ruby B. McDermitt, 81

Ruby B. McDermitt age 81, of Wapakoneta, died at 3:43 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013.
She was born March 8, 1932, to John and Emma Jones Keysor, both parents preceded her in death.
On January 8, 1948, she married Roland Junior McDermitt, who preceded her in death July 20, 2004.
Ruby was a dog breeder and was a judge for the United Kennel Club. She was the president of Ohio Toy Fox Terrier Association.

Mary A. Huber, 70

Mary A. Huber, 70, of Wapakoneta, died at 8:55 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2013, at the St. Rita’s Medical Center, Lima, following a sudden illness. She was born April 28, 1943, in Detroit, Mich., the daughter of Charles & Rita (Scully) Dunleavy, and they preceded her in death. On July 4, 1964, she married Charles N. Huber, who survives.
Other survivors include, a daughter, Cheryl R. (Steve) Griffis, of Wapakoneta; two grandchildren, Charles D. & Megan E. Griffis; a sister, Colleen Dunleavy (Richard) Bekemeier, of Wapakoneta; numerous nieces and nephews.

David A. Herron, 81

David A. Herron, 81, of Wapakoneta, went home to be with the Lord, at 12:59 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013, at St. Rita’s Medical Center, Lima, following a sudden illness. He was born Jan. 25, 1932, in Wabash, Ind., the son of Merle Maurice & Alice (Agle) Herron, who preceded him in death. On Aug. 10, 1960, he married Lou Emma Brown, and she survives.

Kevin J. Jones, 56

Kevin J. Jones, 56, of Clyde, formerly of Wapakoneta, died at 12:55 a.m. Dec. 10, 2013, at his residence surrounded by his loving family, following an extended illness.
He was born January 20, 1957, in Lima to J. Stanley & Mildred (Arnett) Jones, who survives in Wapakoneta. On Sept. 22, 1979, he married Robin L. Rider, who survives on Clyde.

John W. Staples, 58

John W. Staples, 58, of Wapakoneta, died at 10:57 a.m., Monday, Dec. 9, 2013, at the St. Rita’s Medical Center, Lima. He was born April 6, 1955, in Lima, the son of John A. & Ruth (Brewer) Staples, who survives in Wapakoneta. On March 28, 1980, he married Cynthia R. “Cindy” Hibner, and she survives.
Other survivors include, a daughter, Ashlie R. (Andrew) Casey, of Wapakoneta; three grandchildren, Lillie, Hannah, and Cole; a sister, Guyneth (Dean) Coolidge, of Wapakoneta; a sister-in-law & brother-in-law, Theresa (Ted) Johnson, of Brookville; nephews and niece, Tyler, Caity, and Charlie.
