Gyms gear up for new year

December 27, 2013

Eat healthy, lose weight and get fit; these New Year’s resolutions have a lot in common with each other, and they happen to be a few of the resolutions people are most determined to stick to.

With many health related resolutions, local gyms and current gym members are gearing up for the increase in members during the first quarter of the year.

The Red Cross visited Wapakoneta on Thursday to host its regularly scheduled blood drive at St. Paul United Church of Christ.

“There are people in need of blood at all times,” Red Cross Volunteer Susan Myers said, which is the reason Wapakoneta hosts six blood drives throughout the year.

The blood that was donated on Thursday will be transported to Fort Wayne, where it will be distributed throughout different hospitals.

Meeting briefly Thursday evening in special session, the Wapakoneta City Council took care of two money ordinances as end-of-year business.

The measures tagged as emergencies — a temporary appropriations ordinance to start fiscal year 2014, totaling more than $10 million through more than three dozen funds; and a supplemental appropriations ordinance totaling $177,000 to adjust seven different funds — were intended to be passed at the previous council meeting Dec. 16, but were stalled.

December 27, 2013

The Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers got a taste of some big-time competition Thursday on the opening night of the Vicki Mauk Holiday Invitational, hosted by Elida High School.

The young Tigers learned they are not quite ready to feel comfortable in a tournament atmosphere against bigger schools, as the Elida Bulldogs ran past the Tigers in the second half en route to a 70-57 victory Thursday in varsity girls basketball action.

The game was tied 23-23 at halftime, and then Elida owned the third period, outscoring W-G by a whopping 17 points.
