Today, Vern Doenges is now known as the first-ever recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award bestowed Thursday by the Auglaize County Historical Society.
Fifty years ago, the death of U.S. President John Kennedy by an assassinâ€™s bullet changed the nation he governed and the world.
The event also changed the lives of three Wapakoneta men, including one man who was looking to serve on the national stage but who altered his plans when the former Massachusetts senator was shot and killed.
Wapakoneta native Fred Zint said he has two connections to the late president. He met Kennedy, who was then a senator from Massachusetts, during a regional Jaycee meeting in Rockford, Ill. in 1958.

The Wapakoneta Redskins had 12 players selected to the Division III All-Northwest District football teams for the 2013 season.
The all-district teams for all divisions were released Thursday.
Wapak had three first-team selections, senior offensive lineman Kyle Gonterman, senior running back Zach Schmerge and junior defensive end Thomas Schoenlein.

Alfred A. Bustetter, 93, of Wapakoneta, died at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2013, at The Gardens, of Wapakoneta.
He was born July 27, 1920, in Auglaize County, the son of Frances (Fischer) and John Bustetter, who preceded him in death. On June 6, 1945, he married Loretta I. Seitz, and she died Nov. 21, 2011.

Members of the 2013 Wapakoneta Redskins football team appeared in the top five of varying school records upon the conclusion of the season earlier this month.
Two different players set a total of three new schools records.

Third-graders in Chris Talowskyâ€™s class at Wapakoneta Elementary School exclaimed these remarks as they worked in groups throughout the classroom, assigning parts and practicing their assigned lines of a poem they plan to deliver to classmates on Friday.
Itâ€™s part of a weekly assignment, with Talowsky picking a story or writing, often with a seasonal theme, and students working in groups to rehearse it throughout the week before it is performed.
Five Wapakoneta City Schools District students received recognition Tuesday evening from the Wapakoneta VFW for their efforts in a national essay contest.
