Valuing vets

The Wapakoneta community came out to honor the nation’s veterans during the Wapakoneta Middle School’s (WMS) annual tribute to local heroes.
“It will never be equal to what they do for us,” WMS Student Council President Katie Engle said. “We want them to know we appreciate what they do for our country.”
She said student council members organized the event to give thanks to veterans’ many sacrifices and she thought the choirs and music were what made the assembly special.

DWP starts drive

During a ceremony to honor the first participants in a joint private-public downtown Wapakoneta building program, the city’s mayor challenged Wapakoneta City Council to find more money for the fledgling program.
The Downtown Wapakoneta Partnership (DWP) hosted an event Thursday in the Wapakoneta Area Chamber of Commerce Heritage Room to recognize the first six property owners taking advantage of the matching grants available through the Façade Improvement Program.

Club collects ‘Coats for Kids’

Hundreds of Wapakoneta families should be able stay warm this winter thanks to a group of students dedicated to providing coats to children and adults in need.
“Coats for Kids” is a program provided by the Wapakoneta High School’s Octagon Club that collects community-donated coats to be distributed to struggling families throughout Wapakoneta.
Green barrels marked “Coats for Kids” will be set up throughout the community for people to donate new or gently used adult and children sized coats.

Wapakoneta's Warner, Kantner earn district honors

Wapakoneta Redskins senior Sara Warner and varsity coach Ross Kantner each were honored by the Northwest Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association, as the NWOSSCA released its annual all-district awards and scholarship winners Thursday.

Warner earned a spot on the district’s first team in Division II for her performance during the 2013 season.

She was one of six players from Western Buckeye League schools to be a first-team selection in Division II.

Warner was named a first-team All-WBL selection last month.
