November 29, 2013

Mildred M. Park, 87, of Lima, died at 8:30 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2013, at Wapakoneta Manor. She was born June 20, 1926, in Auglaize County, near Fryburg, the daughter of Harry E. & Clara E. (Strominger) Fisher, who preceded her in death. On Nov. 17, 1968, she married Charles R. Park, and he is deceased.

Lowell John Rickert, 79

November 29, 2013

Lowell John Rickert, 79, of Jackson Center, passed away at 6:43 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2013, at his residence. He was born in Shelby County on March 5, 1934, to the late Irvin and Loretta (Evans) Rickert. On June 25, 1955, he married the former Patricia Ambos, and she survives.

Christina D. Burden, 48

November 29, 2013

Christina D. Burden, 48, of Lakeview, passed away, Wednesday evening, Nov. 27, 2013, at her home.
Christina was born on Aug. 20, 1965, in Lima, the daughter of John (Terri) Webb of Waynesfield, and the late Barbara Young Webb. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Ezekiel and Ned.
She is also survived by two children, Sandi Burden of Las Cruces, N.M. and Glen Burden of Lakeview; a sister, Julie Craft, of Lima; two brothers, William (Michele) Webb, of Prairieville, La., and Michael (Kathy) Webb, of Marysville.

John L. Schlegel, 83

November 29, 2013

John L. Schlegel, 83, of rural Cridersville, passed away at 6:34 p.m. Wednesday, surrounded by his family. He was born in Lima on January 25, 1930, to the late John Louis and Henrietta (Storck) Schlegel. On June 8, 1952, he married his childhood sweetheart, Shirley Roser, and she survives.

Minor injuries reported in Wapakoneta crash

An accident involving two vehicles occurred on the state Route 67 construction site around 3:20 p.m. on Friday.
Two minor injuries were reported, and the Ohio State Highway Patrol is still investigating damages.
One of the drivers was driving West bound on state Route 67 and turned, failing to yield to another driver traveling East bound.
Trooper Tim Wenger said both drivers were conscious when taken to the hospital, and no major injuries are expected.
The Wapakoneta Fire and EMS responded to the crash.

Locals line up for deals

ST. MARYS — By 10 a.m. Friday, retailers in St. Marys were seeing the second wave of shoppers, a mix of people finishing up their early morning forays for deals along with the more casual shoppers who didn’t consider themselves Black Friday shoppers so much as people who hadn’t woken up early or stood in lines.
Those who’d been out the night before, however, said it was “chaos.”
Eric Goodwin browsed Sears Friday morning, saying it was the first year he’d had off Black Friday, and had decided to brave crowds the night before and in the morning out of curiosity. He had yet to buy anything.

Election results require official recount

The Auglaize County Board of Elections held official recounts from the Nov. 5 general election for both the Botkins School District Board of Education and the Duchouquet Township Trustees.
Recounts were required because the vote totals were too close, making it an “automatic recount.”
“They have to be separated by more than a half of one percent,” Auglaize County Board of Elections Director Michelle Wilcox said. “They were that close.”

Hometown Holiday celebrities

National and local celebrities will be available to sign autographs at the 7th Annual Hometown Holiday from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. at The Eagles Club in downtown Wapakoneta.
Wapakoneta's own Brian Garman, of the Milwaukee Brewers, and Lacey Detrick, ice skating champion, will be participating in the event. Detrick will be available from noon - 1 p.m.

Rotary spreads Christmas Cheer

The Wapakoneta Rotary Club made a $500 donation to the Wapakoneta Christmas Cheer program; Fire Chief Kendall Krites attended Monday’s meeting to accept the donation.
For the past couple of weeks, the club has “passed the hat” at meetings, explained club President Josh Little, and the club’s board of directors agreed to match whatever was collected during the effort. After the final collection, club members had thrown $248 into the hat.
“It seemed natural to bump that up to $250 and donate the $500,” Little said.

Board shares kudos

Wapakoneta City Schools board members shared kudos from the community during a regular meeting Tuesday.
Ron Mertz first complimented the Wapakoneta High School band on outstanding performances during the football season and then said he recently had a knock on his door with a personal thank you from the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) for a program held for veterans at Wapakoneta Middle School.
He commented on the respect shown the veterans, many of whom said they would never miss the program.
