“I ate too much turkey… my buttons are starting to pop!”
Third-graders in Chris Talowsky’s class at Wapakoneta Elementary School exclaimed these remarks as they worked in groups throughout the classroom, assigning parts and practicing their assigned lines of a poem they plan to deliver to classmates on Friday.
It’s part of a weekly assignment, with Talowsky picking a story or writing, often with a seasonal theme, and students working in groups to rehearse it throughout the week before it is performed.

VFW recognizes student efforts

Five Wapakoneta City Schools District students received recognition Tuesday evening from the Wapakoneta VFW for their efforts in a national essay contest.
“These are great programs to help the kids along,” VFW Commander Delmar Merricle said. “It’s great to see all these essays — the kids really put a lot of effort into them.”
Seventh- and eighth-graders competed in the “VFW Patriots Pen” essay contest, and high school students competed in the “VFW Voice of Democracy.” VFW officers chose the best essays out of those submitted.

Potty talk sparks voting deal

The possible purchase of self-contained bathroom for one city park and another possible one at a second city park fueled a discussion between a Wapakoneta City Council member and a city administrator.
During Monday’s Wapakoneta City Council meeting, 1st Ward Councilor Jim Neumeier questioned the wisdom in expending the money for self-contained systems when portable facilities would be sufficient at Breakfast Optimist Park and a storage building purchased by the city from Wapakoneta City Schools was to be converted into permanent bathroom for men and women.

Firefighters respond to MEI

Firefighters from Wapakoneta and Cridersville fire departments responded to a reported fire at the Midwest Elastomers Inc. plant on Industrial Drive this morning.

Wapakoneta firefighters entered the building which was reported filled with smoke from a dust fire.

Redskins set 3 new individual, team records

Two players on the Wapakoneta Redskins varsity football team  now own three different school records, while the team set three new school records during the 2013 season.

Senior linebacker Zach Schmerge broke the school record for most fumble recoveries in a career by totaling eight upon the conclusion of the 2013 season.

Schmerge had six entering his senior year and recorded two in the playoff game against Shawnee to exceed the previous record of seven held by Brandon Miller.
