Celina eliminates Redskins from tournament

LIMA — The Wapakoneta Redskins improved from their first match this season against the Celina Bulldogs but their effort Thursday was still not enough to gain a win.

Celina beat Wapak in three games Thursday in a Division II Northwest District volleyball sectional semifinal at Lima Senior High School in Lima.

Celina soundly defeated Wapak in three games during the two teams’ Western Buckeye League match Sept. 19, with scores of 25-10, 25-15 and 25-11.

Celina was the co-champion of the WBL this season.

Trojans lose late in double overtime

The Botkins Trojans held off the Casstown Miami East Vikings as long as they could Thursday but a Vikings’ goal with three minutes left in the second overtime ended the match, giving Miami East a 1-0 victory in a Division IV Southwest District girls soccer sectional championship in Casstown.

The two teams played scoreless through 80 regulation minutes and 15 minutes in the first overtime before the Vikings’ winning goal surfaced from a rebound off of a direct kick.

Irish handle Botkins in sectional final

The Springfield Catholic Central Irish were too much for the Botkins Trojans in their 3-0 win Thursday in a Division IV Southwest District volleyball sectional championship, played at Tippecanoe High School in Tipp City.

The Irish had winning scores of 25-12, 25-9 and 25-13.

Catholic Central (23-1) was Division IV’s eighth-ranked team in the Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association poll released Monday.

The loss Thursday ended Botkins’ season with a 8-16 record.

Fatal crash on I-75

A trooper at the Wapakoneta Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol has confirmed there has been a fatality in the crash along southbound Interstate 75.

Due to the crash, traffic had to be routed through Wapakoneta using Ohio 67, County Road 25A, Wood Street and Bellefontaine Street. The crash caused delays in school buses getting children home after school today.

Auglaize County Emergency Management Agency Director Troy Anderson responded to the scene because of a diesel fuel spill.

High speed chase starts in Auglaize County ends in Cincinnati

A high-speed chase —  that went through five Ohio counties before the vehicle was stopped —  began in Auglaize County on Tuesday.

Three of the four occupants of the vehicle leading troopers with the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) on the multi-county pursuit on Interstate 75 are now in custody.

Pork powers park progress

The Breakfast Optimist club is hosting a pulled pork dinner from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday as a fundraiser for the new playground and park on Water Street, in the location of the previous Centennial Elementary School where they have been working to add the second phase of playground equipment. 

“This is one of our two big fundraisers we have throughout the year that we do to raise funds for the community,” Breakfast Optimist Past President Terry Blosser said.

Wapakoneta looks to keep St. Marys winless

Doug Frye can be counted as one who is surprised the St. Marys Roughriders are still winless this season.

The fourth-year Wapakoneta Redskins varsity football coach says his former team is much better this season than last season’s 0-10 St. Marys squad.

“This is a good football team,” Frye said of St. Marys. “Easily this team could have three or four wins at this point in the season.

Five Redskins named all-league selections

The Wapakoneta Redskins had five All-Western Buckeye League selections for the 2013 season, as the WBL released its boys soccer rosters Wednesday.

Wapak junior Sam Hinegardner and freshman Alex Lause each appeared on the WBL’s first team for 2013.

Hinegardner was a second-team choice last season as a junior.

Along with Lause, four other Wapak players appeared on the all-league roster for the first time in 2013.

Wapakoneta puts 5 on league teams

The Wapakoneta Redskins had five all-league performers for the 2013 season, as the Western Buckeye League released its girls soccer rosters Wednesday.

Wapak senior Sara Warner was a first-team All-WBL selection for the first time this season.

Warner was a repeat all-league performer in 2013 after earning second-team honors last season and honorable mention in 2011.

Redskins sophomore Brianna Pequignot was a second-team all-league choice this season.
