Flora twins finding early success for Botkins

BOTKINS — Cameron Flora and Chloe Flora are having virtually identical success in 2013 during their sophomore years.

The twins’ respective cross country teams qualified for the regional meet last Saturday after districts.
Cameron and Chloe earned placed third overall in their respective Shelby County Athletic League meets Oct. 12.

They were each third individually at districts also.

Cameron described what he believes Chloe’s strengths are as a competitive runner.

Local arrested, charged with three felonies by Sheriff's Office

A 60-year-old rural Wapakoneta man was arrested Wednesday following a grand jury indictment for charges involving the use of a minor in nudity-oriented material.
Gregory N. Hengstler, 60, 13690 Brown Road, faces one count of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material, a second-degree felony, one count of gross sexual imposition, a third-degree felony, and one count of pandering obscenity involving a minor, a fifth-degree felony.

Bungeeing Barbies

A few high school seniors were caught playing with Barbie dolls Wednesday morning in the main hall of the Wapakoneta High School.
The “Math Modeling” class, a college transition math class, spent its class time bungee jumping Barbie dolls off a 16-foot, 7-inch drop at the high school.
“They are learning how to use mathematics to predict things,” math teacher Darrell Heintz said.

Redskins aim to beat Van Wert in run game

For the second straight game, the Wapakoneta Redskins will face a winless opponent.

Wapak, after playing the 0-7 St. Marys Roughriders last Friday, will travel to Van Wert this coming Friday to play the 0-8 Cougars in the second to last regular season game, a Western Buckeye League contest in varsity football action at Eggerss Stadium.

The Redskins, after seeing St. Marys’ wing-T offense last Friday, will face another spread offense from Van Wert this Friday.

HTPD to seek levy

Heritage Trails Park District (HTPD) officials announced Tuesday their intent to place a property levy on the primary ballot to fund programming and expansion of the Auglaize County park district into the next decade.
Heritage Trails Park District Commissioner Dave Stillwell explained the park district commissioners agreed to place a seven-year, 0.6-mill property tax levy on the primary ballot in May 2014 in Auglaize County. The levy would generate approximately $300,000 for the park district formed in 1996.

Studying soil

Cautiously sticking a finger in each of four bowls — sand, silt, clay and a combination of the three — students quickly discovered some differences in the types of soil.
Third-graders in Jared Selover’s class at Wapakoneta Elementary School worked on several different experiments on Tuesday as they wrapped up a science unit studying soil.

Zombies to invade downtown

Prepare to be bitten — zombies will be infecting Wapakoneta residents with a good cause this Saturday.
Kids, A Priority Of Wapakoneta (KAPOW) will be hosting its fourth annual Zombie Walk starting at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Wapakoneta Middle School.
KAPOW Vice President Nina Laney said the idea for a zombie walk in Wapakoneta began four years ago, as zombie walks were a growing trend in bigger cities. The idea was a hit in Wapakoneta, as well, and the event has averaged more than 100 participants every year.

Wapakoneta still rated 1st in region

The Wapakoneta Redskins remained first in their region for the third straight week, as the Ohio High School Athletic Association released the weekly Ohio prep football computer ratings with two weeks remaining in the regular season.

Wapakoneta (7-1) was the top team Tuesday in Division III, Region 10.

The top eight teams in each region for Divisions II through VII set to qualify for the playoffs. The top 16 teams in each of Division I’s two regions will make the playoffs.
