Refuse to lose

With a piece of legislation introduced Monday calling for hikes in refuse fees, one Wapakoneta City Council member inquired about taking it a step further — investigating the costs of contracting for refuse and recycling collection.
After the ordinance’s first reading, Wapakoneta 1st Ward Councilor Jim Neumeier questioned the wisdom of legislation calling for a 50 cent increase each year in refuse fees on resident’s utility bills for perpetuity and requested city administrators seek rates from refuse and recycling haulers for the sake of comparison.

ADA — During the year-long controversy and eventual acquittal of George Zimmerman, many citizens found themselves questioning their legal rights of self-defense.
Dr. C. Antoinette Clarke, Ohio Northern University (ONU) criminal law and juvenile justice professor, presented “Shoot First, Ask Questions Later: Self Defense, Stand Your Ground, and the Trayvon Martin Tragedy” at the university’s College of Law Tuesday afternoon.

Lessons in skating

Cautiously making their way along the gym floor, two Wapakoneta Elementary School second-graders roll past the cones and turn a corner with small smiles marking their success.
Avery Hutt, 8, remembers what it was like when she didn’t want to get off the mats where they sit to lace up their roller skates and fasten their wrist guards.
“The first time, I don’t think I went off the mats, now I am not scared at all,” Avery said. “In kindergarten, everyone kept falling.”
Hannah Elling, 7, said skating is fun and each year they get better.

Arden L. Brown, 98

Arden L. Brown, 98, of Cridersville, passed away Monday afternoon, Oct. 7, 2013, at St. Rita’s Medical Center, Lima.
Arden was born on July 23, 1915, in Burt County, Neb. to the late Leo and Anna Carruthers Brown.
On Oct. 24, 1942, he married the former Thelma Miller in Lima and they were married for 70 years before she preceded him in death on Oct. 26, 2012. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Earle and John D. Brown. He is survived by several nieces and nephews.
