Meningitis reported

October 18, 2013

Several recent cases of viral meningitis in the area have gotten the attention of local health officials.
“We are looking for commonalities but haven’t found any,” Auglaize County Nursing Supervisor Cindy Jones said of the several cases reported in Auglaize, Mercer and Van Wert counties. “It is unusual to have this many.”
She said many of the cases have been reported in young children and a majority have been in Mercer County.

Envoys of good

The new kid in school typically has trouble getting their locker open or sometimes finding the right classroom. They often sit by themselves during lunch and talk little to others during the school day.
Three years ago, Wapakoneta Middle School students took full ownership of a program to break down those barriers — the Ambassador’s Club — which helps new students become acclimated with the school and intermingle with other students.
“You get to show new students around the school,” fifth-grader Gwen VanVorhees said, explaining they sit with them during lunch for a week to help.

Tutoring to help students

Many students struggle to find help outside of the classroom for homework, tests and everyday studying. For Wapakoneta Middle School fifth-graders, they should look no further than their own school.
Seventh-grade tutor Brooke Mullen, 13, said she chose to help fifth-graders because she wants to use her gifts to help others.
She said school is easy for her, but she understands that many students do not learn as quickly. She said her favorite subject is math, which is the subject she enjoys tutoring the most.
“I get to help kids that don’t exactly understand the concepts,” Brooke said.

Shelter ahead of schedule

The construction of a county dog shelter is approximately a week ahead of schedule at this time, the Auglaize County dog warden says.
In a meeting with Auglaize County commissioners this week, Dog Warden Russ Bailey said the roof is being started and is expected to take more than a week to complete. A natural gas line also was recently ran to the building located off Dearbaugh Avenue along U.S. 33 behind the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office and to the back of the camping area at the Auglaize County Fairgrounds.
