Audrey Moore, 35

December 17, 2012

Audrey Lynne Moore, 35, of Payne, went home to be with her Lord and Savior at 11:25 am Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012, at Van Wert Inpatient Hospice Center after bravely fighting a lengthy battle with cancer.
Audrey was born Feb. 16, 1977, in Paulding, the daughter of Nancy (Thompson) and Tony Burkley. Her parents survive in Payne. On Aug. 26, 2000, she married Chad Moore, who survives.
Also surviving are a son, Dane (age 10); and a daughter, Mallory (age 7), both at at home; and a sister, Alison Burkley, of Hilton Head Island, S.C.

Christmas Cheer brings tears of joy

Five months ago, a group of Wapakoneta area people got together and started planning an annual event aimed at bringing cheer to local residents during the holiday season.

Two weeks ago, the same group started by dividing items into boxes and by the end of the Friday night prior to their delivery — wrapped toys and gifts stretched upward out of those boxes. The group even started dividing food stuffs.

Shopping trip means smiles, hugs for officers

Dressed in full uniform, area law enforcement officers accompany children and their parents through the front door of the Wapakoneta Walmart.

Leading one group, Auglaize County Sheriff Al Solomon comments on the smiles on their faces. He is not only talking about the children who are participating in the annual “Shop With a Cop” but he is addressing the officers with police departments, the Sheriff’s Office and the Wapakoneta Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The Wapakoneta City Schools is extremely saddened about the events in Connecticut and our thoughts and prayers go out to the communities, school and families impacted by this tragedy. The Wapakoneta City Schools will be hosting a School Safety discussion open to the parents and the community on Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. School and law enforcement officials will be in attendance. The purpose of this meeting is to explain what precautions we currently have in place, to answer questions if possible and perhaps hear any ideas for improved security provisions.

Sad about Connecticut shooting, glad about local safety measures

The school shooting at a Connecticut elementary school, the second deadliest shooting at a school and the most ever at an elementary school, prompted areas school officials and students to reflect on safety here.

Area school officials and students were unanimous in their sadness over the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School, but they remarked they believe things are safe at their respective schools.

“I just can’t imagine someone doing that,” Wapakoneta High School junior Logan Martin said. “It is hard to imagine.”

Academic Team continues winning tradition

A popular game show is what prompted several members of a championship academic team to compete to test their knowledge.

Wapakoneta High School senior Ross Kohler and junior Austin Klingler both started on the high school’s Academic Team the first chance they got in fifth grade. Junior George Jose joined as an eighth-grader after coming to the school from St. Joseph School. Junior Colin Jarvis is the newcomer, joining the team this year.

Former veterans helping veterans with gift

Fulfilling the wishes of a couple who served in the U.S. military, representatives with the state and county Disabled American Veterans (DAV) organizations accepted a $100,000 check this week to help veterans with training and transportation.

On behalf of Lt. Col. Marie Bilyj and Col. Stephen Bilyj, Susan and Tom Stinebaugh presented the check Wednesday to state DAV Commander Michael Stith and State Adjustant Will Davis. Stinebaugh is a nephew of Marie Bilyj.

Richard D. “Babe” Hormann, 86, of Wapakoneta, died Friday afternoon, Dec. 14, 2012, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital, St. Marys.  Arrangements are incomplete at the Bayliff & Eley Funeral Home, Wapakoneta.

Nicholas E. Miller, 59

Nicholas E. Miller, 59, of New Bremen died on Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012, at 6:02 p.m. at the Cleveland Clinic, following a brief illness.  

He was born on March 2, 1953, in Lima.  He was the son of Betty (Moran) and George Miller, both of whom preceded him in death.  On April 20, 1979, he married Debra Wright who survives in New Bremen.
