As many as 300 Wapakoneta High School students have given back to others this holiday season in a myriad of ways throughout the community.
“I believe that it is important for our staff and our kids to be active in our community at all times, especially around the Christmas season,” Wapakoneta High School Principal Aaron Rex said. “Our students are able to learn about what community service is and how to help others who may be in need whether it is a medical condition or financial need.
ST MARYS — The United Way of Auglaize County was approximately $50,000 shy of its $350,000 fundraising goal as of Wednesday, but organizers are projecting only a $5,000 to $7,000 shortfall by the time corporate payroll-deduction giving is included, which represents small donations from individuals.
Bettie J. Schaub, 91, of Wapakoneta, died at 2:50 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 23, 2012, at Auglaize Acres.

Violet L. Hardin, 92, of Wapakoneta, died at 4:43 a.m. Dec. 20, 2012, at OtterbeinCridersville.
She was born Oct. 5, 1920, in Auglaize County, to Violet L. (Kohlhorst) and Raymond I. Coates who preceded her in death. On Aug. 2, 1941, she married Paul R. Hardin and he passed away Nov. 4, 1980.
Mary Lou Gill, 85, died at 6:10 a.m. Friday at Wapakoneta Manor.
She was born June 23, 1927, in Harrod, to Edna G. Mowery and Fred R. Conkle.
On July 14, 1945, she married Raymond E. Gill and he preceded her in death in July 1971.
Survivors include a son, Al (Susan) Gill, of Wapakoneta; a daughter, Beverly (Dennis) Vernon, of Wapakoneta; four grandchildren, Melissa (Randy) Rentz, Matthew Gill, Brian (Amber) Vernon, Lindsay (Benjamin) Stachowicz; and four great-grandchildren, Joshua, Nathan, Andrew and Madilyn Ann.
By emphasizing the reason for the season, a lot of the stress associated with the holidays can be avoided, advised a top county health official.
“There is no perfect holiday, no perfect family,” Auglaize County Medical Director Dr. Juan Torres said. “When you accept that, you will have a better holiday.”
He also recommended not overspending.
“You can’t buy love with gifts,” Torres said.
He said this time of year, people can suffer from seasonal affective disorder (SAD) or the holiday blues.
An Auglaize County grand jury recently decided against indicting against a local physician who serves as county coroner, according to a news release from the state Attorney General’s Office.
State Attorney General’s Office Press Secretary Eve Mueller issued a news release Friday that an Auglaize County grand jury deliberated for two days before unanimously voting for a no bill, or to not return an indictment, against Wapakoneta long-time physician and Auglaize County Coroner Dr. Thomas Freytag.

County plans for the new year include taking another look at building a new dog facility.
During a monthly meeting Thursday with Auglaize County Dog Warden Russ Bailey, the Auglaize County commissioners made plans to schedule a meeting in late January with architects, who have done preliminary drawings for such a project.
A 90-year-old Wapakoneta woman died Thursday morning crossing Glynwood Road to collect mail or her morning newspaper from her mailbox.
Carolyn Blackburn, 803 Glynwood Road, apparently walked directly into the path a vehicle driven by 19-year-old Zachary Myers, of Wapakoneta, as he was driving east on Glynwood Road at approximately 7 a.m., according to a news release from the Wapakoneta Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP). Blackburn received life-threatening injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by Auglaize County Coroner Dr. Thomas Freytag.
