Honda investment

ANNA — Honda of America  Manufacturing Inc. executives officially announced Wednesday the company plans to invest $98 million at its engine plant in Anna to make high-tech components for its new transmission and to help Honda start its comeback in the United States after tough fourth quarter.

Ohio Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor, who visited the plant for the ceremony, addressed the crowd of several hundred during the company’s announcement.

BASKETBALL: Wapak, St. Marys renew rivalry

Statistically there isn’t a lot riding on Friday night’s showdown between the Wapakoneta Redskins and the St. Marys Roughriders.

Like that’s ever mattered before.

The cross-county foes renew their rivalry with little else on the line besides bragging rights and momentum heading into the home stretch of the season.

Neither team is a contender in the Western Buckeye League standings, where they share identical 1-4 league records.

Both teams are trying to salvage seasons that are on the verge of spiraling out of control.

Family thankful to have missing dog back

A small, 6-pound dog disappeared from her owners during a snowy weekend in January, and was found days later. Owners say it was a miracle she survived.

The Claytons — Meisha, 19, Monique, 11, and their mother, Tina, had lost their 7-year-old pomeranian, Coco, prior to a snowy weekend on Jan. 20, and were emotionally devastated. They hoped for the best, but prepared for the worst.

“I personally think that this is proof that God exists because I couldn’t see how a little dog like her could survive in snow,” Meisha said.

Mildred Botkin, 93

Mildred A. Botkin, 93, formerly of 1033 S. Wayne St., St. Marys, died at 7:45 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2012, at her daughter’s residence in Xenia where she had resided for the past two years.
She was born Aug. 5, 1918, in Rockford, the daughter of Frances (Witter) and John Alspaugh.
On June 11, 1946, she married Charles Botkin, and he preceded her in death on Sept. 21, 2010.
Surviving is a daughter, Jean Rupert, of Xenia.
Services are at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Miller-Long in St. Marys, with the Rev. Tim Smith, officiating. Burial will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery in St. Marys.

Jody Heppeard, 47

Jody M. Heppeard Hughes, 47, of Celina, died Monday, Jan. 30, 2012, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys.
She was born Dec. 18, 1964, in Celina, the daughter of Mary Heppeard Massengill and Bill R. Hughes, who both survive.
Also surviving are three sons, Richard Kupper, of Wapakoneta, William Brown, of Celina, and Randy Hughes, of Washington; and two daughters, Kaylea Beougher, of Celina, and Sherri Kupper, of Wapakoneta.
Services are at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12, at The Lord’s Church in Celina, with the Rev. Randy Christian officiating.
There will be no visitation.

Jody M. Heppeard Hughes, 47, of Celina, died Monday, Jan. 30, 2012 at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys.

Poll worker recognized

An 82-year-old Kossuth woman carried on a strong family tradition of serving at the polls to help Auglaize County voters.

Emaline Core followed in the footsteps of her father, her brother and her husband serving as a poll worker in Salem Township. Her retirement after 44 years was recognized by the Auglaize County Elections Board and the Ohio Secretary of State’s Office on Tuesday with a proclamation.

Wapak YMCA campaign aims to change lives

Longtime Wapakoneta businessman Van Wright stood in the middle of a community room at the Wapakoneta Family YMCA he helped build more than 10 years ago. All eyes in the room were on him.

“We’re in one business — the life changing business,” Wright said. “No one has more value at the Y than another, we’re all Y members, we’re all part of the same community. There’s only one way that can happen — and that’s with the scholarship campaign.”

Nancy Horner, 73

Nancy Louise Horner, 73, formerly of St. Marys, died at 11:15 a.m. Jan. 30, 1212 at Van Wert Manor.
She was born Feb. 11, 1939, in Salem Township, Auglaize County, near St. Marys, the daughter of Viola N. (Shaner) and Raymond S. Ginter.
Surviving are three sons, Aaron Horner, of St. Marys, Alan Horner, of St. Marys, and Andrew Horner, of St. Marys; and a daughter, Ann Wilker, of Van Wert.
Services are at 2 p.m. Thursday at Miller – Long & Folk Funeral Home in St. Marys, with the Rev. Bill Maki officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens near Moulton.
