Neil Armstrong, who was born on a farm outside of Wapakoneta, returned as a teen and graduated from Blume High School, made “one giant leap for mankind” with “one small step for a man” when he was the first person to walk on the moon in 1969.
Armstrong, who often said he found more excitement in landing the lunar module on the moon than actually taking a step, died today at the age of 82. Wapakoneta is considered the boyhood home of the famed astronaut, engineer and pilot.
WAYNESFIELD— Waynesfield-Goshen varsity football coach Gary Spencer did not keep it secret that the Tigers needed to play mistake-free football to win the season opener against Delphos Jefferson Friday.
They managed to do it for a half, but three costly turnovers in the second half led to their undoing in a 38-17 loss.
BELLEFONTAINE — Despite a better offensive showing from the Bellefontaine Chieftains compared to their 2011 campaign, the Wapakoneta Redskins were able to cruise to a 49-13 victory Friday night.
After the game, Wapakoneta Varsity head coach Doug Frye said he was happy with how his team played, but said there was still room for improvement after the Redskins 36-point victory.
Led by senior Caleb Acheson’s 2-under 34, the Wapakoneta boys golf team beat the Bath Wildcats Thursday afternoon.
A home match for the Redskins at the Wapakoneta Country Club, Acheson and the rest of the Wapak golfers came up with a 5-stroke victory, 157-162, over a strong Bath squad.
“It was a decent day, I didn’t hit the ball as well as I probably could have, putting is definitely what saved me,” Acheson said after his round.
Behind the speed and foot of junior Sara Warner, the Wapakoneta girls soccer team found its first win of the season Thursday night.
Warner had two goals on the day, and accounted for the only scoring in the match.
“I think that we played really well, we really played as a team and I think we really dominated the second half as far as possession and getting goal opportunities,” Warner said after the game.
