Rex E. Shaffer, 79, of rural Spencerville, died at 6:05 p.m. Saturday, July 14, 2012, at The Ohio State University Hospital East in Columbus, where he had been a patient for two months with an extended illness.
He was born Jan. 16, 1933, in Van Wert County, the son of Flossie Mae (Etchison) and Homer Earl Shaffer. On April 7, 1956, he married Dorothy K. Robey, who survives.
Also surviving are three sons; William Clark Shaffer, of Spencerville, Brent Allen Shaffer, of Wapakoneta, and Richard Neal (Patty) Shaffer, of Delphos.
Chrisie Ann Penrose, 27, of Lakeview, passed away Saturday morning, July 14, 2012, at her home.
She was born March 21, 1985, in Bellefontaine, to Cathy Newkirk, of Bellefontaine, and Donald (Donna) Penrose, of Lakeview.
Also surviving are a sister, Jerrie Baum; two brothers, Nicholas (Jessie) Newkirk, of Bellefontaine, and Dusty Penrose, of Bellefontaine; her stepmother, Kay Penrose, of Wapakoneta; and many cousins, aunts and uncles.
She was preceded in death by paternal grandmother, Mary O’Rock, maternal grandparents, Charles “Fred” and Barbara Newkirk; and an uncle, Kirby Newkirk.
Kerry Bill Hasting, 58, of Wapakoneta, died at 1:50 a.m. Saturday, July 14, 2012, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.
He was born Jan. 29, 1954, in Lima, the son of Evalyn Jean (Shaner) and Wilbur “Bill” Hasting. His father is deceased, and his mother, Evalyn Jean Hasting Ellis survives in Wapakoneta. On July 6, 1974, he married Cynthia Elaine “Cindy” Leonard Hasting, and she survives.
Phyllis K. Roose, 88, of Russells Point, died at 3:50 a.m. Saturday, July 14, 2012, in her home.
She was born July 8, 1924 in Wilshire, the daughter of Eva Marbaugh and Paul Schaffner, who preceded her in death. On Sept. 16, 1943, she married Roy N. Roose Jr., who died Jan. 12, 1997.

Donald L. Mathews, 78 of Kansas, died at 12:55 a.m. Wednesday, July 11, 2012, at Cleveland Clinic.
He was born Nov. 26, 1933, at Tama, the son of Laura Etta (Swander) and Russell Raymond Mathews, who are deceased. On Aug. 4, 1962, he married Ruth A. Morehead, who survives.
Also surviving are three sisters, Elaine (Don) Turner, of Rockford, Ill., Loretta (Ed) Rostorfer, of Lansing, Mich., and Janet (Don) Schwartz, of Sidney; and many nieces and nephews.
A Wapakoneta mother can’t remember how many units of blood her son went through after he was diagnosed with cancer.
What she can remember vividly is the time nurses told her they may not have the blood they needed for him and may have to order it and wait for it to arrive.
Judy Strauser is hoping a blood drive dedicated in memory of her son, Jason Strauser, can help others in their time of need.
A long time member of the Auglaize County Health Board has resigned after more than 20 years of service.
Dr. David Nielsen, who has served on the board since 1991, decided that at 91-years-old, it was time for him to leave the board, over which he has served as president for 20 years.
“Looking at my 91 years, I felt as if it was wise to retire now and have someone younger take my place,” Nielsen told the Wapakoneta Daily News on Friday.
Wapakoneta Area Economic Development Council (WAEDC) Director Greg Myers told board members this week that the organization hopes to become aggressive in attracting more business to the area as the economy continues to slowly recover.
Myers told the board he recently submitted a budget request with Auglaize County Commissioners for a considerable increase in funding to address economic development in the county.
Commissioners are considering the request as they outline their budget, Myers said.
