Clara Stammen, 69

July 18, 2012

Clara Belle Stammen, 69, of Wapakoneta, died at 1:04 p.m. Monday, July 16, 2012, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.
She was born Oct. 17, 1942, in Cridersville, the daughter of the late Dorothy C. Botkins and Clarence Rhodes. On May 4, 1964, she married Thomas Marion Stammen, who survives in Wapakoneta.

COLDWATER — For 15 years as head coach of the Wapakoneta ACME team, Willie Sammetinger had never seen his team make the state tournament.

Willie Sammetinger is a patient man.

The long wait came to an end Monday, as the Redskins blasted by Coldwater in their own back yard with an 8-0 win in the district final.

“We were close last year,” Sammetinger said after the game. “We came within one run. This year they kicked the door down and ran right through it.”

City: Stay or go: Council must decide between CB Richard Ellis, Alterra

Should they stay or should they go.

After a presentation Monday by Wapakoneta Area Economic Development Council (WAEDC) Executive Director Greg Myers, Wapakoneta City Council members must ultimately decide which industrial site real estate company to represent the 471-acre Job Ready Sites-certified West Central Ohio Industrial Center — to stay with CB Richard Ellis or to go with the new firm Alterra, of Columbus. They also could elect to not sign a contract.

Health Board renews lease

Auglaize County Health Department officials plan to keep the county agency in its leased location at 214 S. Wagner St. for at least a few more years.

Auglaize County Health Board members recently approved extending the building lease for another three years at $6,000 per month rent.

The building is rented from TADD Investments.

Cyclists propose path for future

Suggestions to make Wapakoneta a more cycling friendly community grabbed the attention Monday of Wapakoneta City Council members including the Streets, Alleys and Sidewalks Committee chair.

Scott Risner, who rides with the local group Revolution Cycling, addressed councilors at Monday’s meeting to propose ways to make the Wapakoneta community already rich with cycling history more appealing to a growing population who are riding their bicycles more and more for leisure and transportation.

Daniel Davies, 70

Daniel M. “Dan” Davies, 70, of Wapakoneta, died at 6:29 p.m. Saturday, July 14, 2012, at the Lima Memorial Health System Emergency Room.
He was born Nov. 15, 1941, in Superior, Wis., the son of Berta (Marks) and Philip Davies, who preceded him in death. On July 15, 1978, he married Beverly J. Hawkins, and she survives.

Hometown gathering: Attendance up at jamboree

CRIDERSVILLE — Two young entrepreneurs say they not only enjoyed watching the Cridersville Fireman’s Jamboree parade, but they helped parade attendees stay hydrated.

Abigail and Leah Ranchel sat along Cridersville’s Main Street at their lemonade stand, as they served fresh, cold lemonade for 25 cents per cup.

“We did this to get some money. We get to sell lemonade, and it’s a great day to do that. I love to sell lemonade,” seven-year-old Leah said. “We did this last year for the parade, too.”

Moving toward more complete hazard analysis

Auglaize County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) members agreed that they need to have a more detailed hazard analysis for the county.

“We want to get a better picture,” Auglaize County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) Director Troy Anderson said. “We want to bring information together from all the different entities — the health department, hospital, sheriff, industry.

“We want to get back to the basic roots of the LEPC and enhance what we are doing,” he said.

Youth plans to help people through art

A local adult is taking her passion for art to a whole new level.

Twenty-one year old Allison Venturella, of Wapakoneta, is currently studying art education at Bowling Green State University.

But instead of wanting to teach in a traditional school, she wants to use her knowledge to give kids a second chance.
