Mervin Quellhorst, 82

Mervin J. Quellhorst, 82, of New Bremen, died at 12:25 a.m. Saturday, June 23, 2012, at the Auglaize Acres in Wapakoneta.
He was born Aug. 2, 1929, in St. Marys Township, Auglaize County, the son of Aurelia (Donnerberg) and Clarence Quellhorst. On Sept. 5, 1953, he married Jeannette A. Vogel, and she survives near New Bremen.
Also surviving are his children; Jerry (Janet) Quellhorst. of Pickerington, Thomas (Becky) Quellhorst, of New Bremen, Bruce (Terri) Quellhorst, of New Bremen, and Dean (Susan) Quellhorst, of New Knoxville.

Norma Rickert, 78

Norma M. Rickert, 78, of Wapakoneta, died at 2:11 p.m. Friday, June 22, 2012, at Lima Memorial Health Systems following a sudden illness.
She was born Dec. 5, 1933, in Wapakoneta, the daughter of Agnes (Roby) and Willard Ruck, who preceded her in death. On June 15, 1952, she married Paul E. Rickert, and he survives.

'Skins 'Dom'ination: Wapak sweeps Bath

Total domination.

After falling behind 3-0 in the first game of a doubleheader, the Wapakoneta Redskins ACME dominated the Bath Wildcats ACME team with a sweep of the twin bill.

The Redskins beat the Wildcats 9-3 in the opening game behind an 11-strikeout, three-hit performance by starting pitcher Dom Campos, and Wapak used their batting eye and bats for a 15-5 win in the second game as the team collected 10 hits.

The white paper bags lining the track of the Greater Auglaize County Relay for Life this weekend each represented a life.

Some were in honor of cancer survivors, while others were in memory of those who lost their battles with the disease. They recognized grandparents, children, brothers, sisters, parents, prom dates, and friends from all walks of life.

Teams work to raise money

With themed laps all through the night, visits from Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny, games, contests and a wide array of food, including Twinkie Dogs and Krispy Kreme Burgers, organizers of the Greater Auglaize County Relay for Life deemed it a success.

“We had a really good turnout,” Relay for Life Chair Tiffany Fullenkamp said. “We really got the word out and had a great line up of events.”

Brush fire prompts concern

The Wapakoneta Fire Department received a number of calls Saturday evening regarding a fire near a woods south of U.S. 33 between County Road 25A and Interstate 75.

Motorists passing the woods saw flames climbing more than 20 feet in the air near a woods on the northern end of Progress Drive near a woods before the drive becomes part of a small section of Canning Factory Road which leads back to a couple of houses close to I-75.
