Ohio’s state treasurer spoke to an audience swelling to more than 100 people Thursday at The Grand Plaza ballroom about his run for the U.S. Senate.
Republican Josh Mandel, 34, of Beachwood, is seeking to unseat Democratic U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, who is seeking his second semester. The event was hosted by the Auglaize and Allen County Patriots.
Mandel, who was elected to the state treasurer position in November 2010, said he has made common sense changes while in office effectively reducing the budget by $1.2 million by the end of his first fiscal year.

CRIDERSVILLE — In a room with a capacity of 38, approximately 60 village residents sat and stood shoulder-to-shoulder in the council chambers during a Cridersville Village Council Committee-of-the-Whole meeting Wednesday as councilors focused on overtime concerns of the village’s police chief.
A recent news article about overtime hours of area police chiefs caused the stir in this village of approximately 1,850 people, and the mayor along with councilors addressed this issue.
WAYNESFIELD — A group of local students recently took a creative approach to learning and did some good in their community at the same time.
Lori Dyer, animal science teacher at Waynesfield-Goshen High School, inserted a national program called, “Service Learning into the Curriculum” for the class. The projects students came up with were nothing short of amazing.
A new member and the need for more American Red Cross volunteers were discussed during Wednesday’s regular bimonthly meeting of the Auglaize County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC).
With several key members of the group absent so they could attend another meeting, LEPC business discussion was brief.

After four months on the job, the new director for the Auglaize County Veterans Services Commission has submitted his resignation.
Pat Krendl, who officially took over the post the first week of January, submitted his resignation letter April 23 informing Veterans Services Commission Board members of his decision, effective the same day.
Area residents in need of help for home projects can call the The Wapakoneta Area Ministerial Association (WAMA) — as the organization’s members recently announced they will participate in the third annual Servants Day.
Servants Day is set for Sept. 22, the fourth Saturday in September, with a rain date set for the next Saturday, Sept. 29.
Unemployment rates tumbled by 0.5 percent in March, placing Auglaize County among the lowest in the state.
In data released by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, Auglaize County registered an unemployment rate of 6.4 percent, down from 6.9 percent in February. That figure placed Auglaize County as one of eight counties statewide to have an unemployment rate of less than 6.5 percent. Last year in March, the unemployment rate sat at 7.8 percent.
Marjorie M. McElroy, 82, of Monroe, Ind., formerly of Celina, died Tuesday, May 1, 2012, at Adams Memorial Hospital in Decatur, Ind.
She was born May 14, 1929, in Van Wert County, the daughter of Iva B. (Uncapher) and William H. Walser. On June 1, 1947, she married Robert E. McElroy, who preceded her in death on May 28, 2008.
Surviving are three sons, Ralph W. McElroy, of Wapakoneta, Robert E. McElroy, of San Diego, and George D. McElroy, of Monroe, Ind.; and three daughters, Deborah K. McElroy, of Houston, Texas, Delores A. Hart, of Portland, Ind., and Bonnie L. Baker, of Rockford.
Margaret L. “Marge” Menchhofer, 91, formerly of 706 Magnolia Drive, St. Marys, and a resident of the St. Marys Living Center, died at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 28, 2012, at the St. Marys Living Center.
She was born March 15, 1921, in Auglaize County, the daughter of Matty Marie (Schlechty) and Charles Hay. On April 12, 1942, she married Martin E. Menchhofer, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 29, 2011.
She is survived by two sons, Larry Menchhofer, of South Bloomingville, and Steve Menchhofer, of Rockbridge; and a daughter, Sherry Howey, of Columbus.

John Walters, known as the Graveyard Groomer, is returning to Wapakoneta for the fourth time to spend time in graveyards — his third time to host a workshop for the Auglaize County Historical Society.
