Bark park sparks talks

With more than a dozen passionate supporters clamoring Wednesday for a dog park in the city, city leaders agreed to visit area dog parks and take inventory of possible ground for a dog park in the city of Wapakoneta.

Wapakoneta 1st Ward Councilor Jim Neumeier, who chairs the Parks and Recreation Committee, intends to develop a list of available ground in the city’s current park system among Veterans Memorial Park, Heritage Park, Harmon Park, Belcher Park and the new park as well as other possible city ground.

Couple’s work earns ‘Mankind’ award

A local couple say they were pleasantly surprised after being presented a prestigious award — one that has not been presented in more than five years — at a Wapakoneta organization’s meeting this week.

The Rev. Elaine Mikesell and her husband, Dr. Alan Mikesell, of Wapakoneta, were awarded the “Service to Mankind Award” by the Wapakoneta Sertoma Club during the club’s meeting on Wednesday afternoon.

Teaching began as a girl for retiree

A teacher who recently retired from Wapakoneta Elementary School after 35 years began her career long before that, helping her dolls learn to read.

“I always pretended I was a teacher,” said Melanie Webb this week, on her first day off the job in all these years. “I lined up my doll babies and made up worksheets. I had this big chalk board where I would write lesson plans.”

Webb said in part it was an admiration of her grandmother, Margrete Erb, who taught in a one-room school house, which inspired her to become a teacher.

Leonard Browning, 87

Leonard T. Browning, 87, formerly of Harrison, died at 3:47 a.m. Wednesday, May 30, 2012, at Otterbein – St. Marys.
He was born Nov. 20, 1924, in Woodbine, Ky., to Grace A. (Decker) and Andrew J. Browning. On May 10, 1947, he married Lois B. Burch, who died March 18, 2008.
Surviving are two daughters, Sister Lynn Julian, of Cincinnati, and Wanda Dammeyer, of New Bremen.
Services are at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Blue Grass Memorial Gardens in Nicholasville, Ky. and at 3 p.m. Friday at Meyer Community Chapel of Otterbein – St. Marys, with the Rev. Dean Greenwood officiating.

Sharon Fitzgerald, 52

Sharon Louise Fitzgerald, 52, 624 Taft St., Sidney, passed away at 11:45 a.m. Monday, May 28, 2012, at her home.
She was born Aug. 27, 1959, in Sidney, the daughter of Carolyn (Helmlinger) and Roger Metz of Botkins. On March 17, 2007, she married James Fitzgerald, who survives.
Also surviving are four step-children, Brenda Hale, of Attwood, Ind., Teresa Longacre, of Kimmell, Ind., Anthony J. Fitzgerald, of Atwood, Ind., and Mindy L. Polar, of Frankford; 13 step-grandchildren; and a step-great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Steven L. Metz; and a nephew, Gary E. Metz.

Murlin Doseck, 78

Murlin George Doseck, 78, of Wapakoneta, died at 10:48 p.m. Monday, May 28, 2012, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.
He was born April 26, 1934, near Minster, the son of Julianna (Behr) and Christopher Doseck, who preceded him in death. On July 23, 1960, he married Marilyn S. Debell, and she survives.

Alverta Holsheiser, 95

Alverta Eileen Holsheiser, 95, a resident of Otterbein Saint Marys Retirement Community and, formerly of Springfield, Ill., died at 1:23 a.m. Sunday, May 27, 2012, at Otterbein Saint Marys Retirement Community.
.She was born April 26, 1917, in Girard, Ill., the daughter of Vega (Shull) and Otis Riffey. On Dec. 10, 1937, she married Charles H. Holsheiser, and he preceded her in death April 7, 1999.
Surviving is a daughter, Carol Lynn Yost, of Celina.

Alice May Bowersock, 73

Alice May Bowersock, 73, of Wapakoneta, died at 1:50 a.m. Tuesday, May 29, 2012, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.
She was born March 14, 1939, in Duchouquet Township, Auglaize County, the daughter of Anna Pearl (Frazier) and Harley Bowersock, who preceded her in death.
Survivors are three sisters, Violet M. Bowersock, of Wapakoneta, Freda A. Bowersock, of Wapakoneta, and Kathryn P. Daugherty, of Kalida; three sisters-in-law, Dorothy Bowersock, of Wapakoneta, Juanita Bowersock, of Lima, and Barbara Bowersock, of Lima; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Robert Nagel, 83

Robert S. Nagel, 83, of New Bremen, died at 1:02 p.m. Monday, May 28, 2012, at Kindred Hospital in Lima.
He was born July 23, 1928, in Minster, the son of Odillia (Schwieterman) and Charles Nagel. On April 7, 1951, he married Donna L. Donnerberg who survives in New Bremen.

Wapakoneta baseball coach Jason Brandt knew pitching wasn’t going to be a problem in the leadup to the 2012 season.

Hitting?  Now that was a question mark.

The Redskins returned just three players with a combined 100 varsity at bats.  The new bat standards only added to the suspense.

As Wapakoneta (24-5) prepares for its first trip to the state baseball tournament, that question has been answered.

The Redskins are batting .320 as a team and have scored 29 runs in five tournament games.
