County herbicides increase slightly

Prices for herbicides used to kill weeds along county roadways and open ditches have seen little increase since last year.

“It’s one of the few items that have stabilized, where we have seen no large increase,” Auglaize County Engineer Doug Reinhart said.

Bids recently accepted for the herbicides were for $299.73 a gallon for Milestone from Red River, Arborchem and CWC. It marked an increase of 27 cents from 2011.

BOTKINS — Seven-year-old Hope Alig is best known for her smile that always seems to be on her face.

However, just talking a few minutes with her and you realize there is a more to her than just a smile.

The daughter of Candy and Jason Alig is the youngest of four children, two sisters and a brother. However, all of her siblings are grown.

TRACK: Hayzlett aiming for return to state

Megan Hayzlett was just a little disappointed.

Who could blame her?

Two years ago, as a freshman, the advanced all the way to the Division I state track and field meet in the high jump.

Then, as a sophomore, she made it to regionals but to qualify for the state meet.  

So the goal this year for the Wapakoneta Redskins junior was a simple one.

SOFTBALL: 'Skins quietly drop Defiance

The Wapakoneta Redskins didn’t need a lot of offense for the win.

And that’s exactly what they got, not a lot of offense.

Despite collecting just three hits, Wapak pulled out a 4-1 win over the Defiance Bulldogs in a Western Buckeye League varsity softball game Friday at Wapakoneta High School.

“The big thing was our defense really came alive tonight,” Wapak varsity coach Bill Sammons said.  “I really feel like we turned a corner a little bit.”

TENNIS: Wapak blanks Defiance

The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity boys tennis team continued its winning ways, rolling to a 5-0 win over the Defiance Bulldogs in a Western Buckeye League match Friday at Wapakoneta High School.

With the win, Wapak improved to 8-3 overall and 5-2 in the WBL.  Defiance fell to 2-8 and 1-5.

In first singles, senior Nic Oen bested junior Michael Sanchez 6-4, 6-0.

Senior Joey Jose won in second singles, topping junior Austin Fishpaw 6-0, 6-3.

Senior Andy Faller beat sophomore Nolan Parsons 6-1, 6-1 in third singles.

Fundraiser kick-off

In fewer than 60 seconds, teachers were wrapped in toilet paper, pulled tissues from boxes, stacked Ding Dongs on their foreheads and knocked water bottles down using a ball inside pantyhose which they wore over their heads.

Wapakoneta Elementary School teachers competed by grade level in Minute To Win It games Friday afternoon as they kicked off the schools’ annual service learning project, encouraging kids to help kids by giving to the Ronald McDonald House.

Better than flowers better than sympathy, better than before

Recuperating from breast cancer surgery in 1994, Jill Forrest and her husband, Ed, looked for ways to help her recover from the invasive surgery.

The couple decided to work with sports management specialist and certified trainer Lauren Antorino Griffin and board certified and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Peter Neumann. The resulting work was a program called “Better Than Before,” a fitness video designed for women following breast cancer surgery.

W-G hosts day with the arts

WAYNESFIELD — A new twist on Waynesfield-Goshen Local Schools’ career day proved to be an overwhelming success Friday at the school.

After a career day was held in the morning, several classrooms hosted presentations of a variety of skills and were well-received by student for its first annual “A Day With the Arts.”

“This is the first year we have hosted this kind of an event,” school technology coach Leah Fullenkamp said. “It has been well-received by the students. They were having a good time.”

Secure measures: Extra security to be taken after courthouse opens

Moving forward with improved security as part of Auglaize County Courthouse renovations, the Auglaize County commissioners have purchased equipment necessary for those updates.

This week the commissioners approved the purchase of a scanner and magnatometer to place at the single entry point to the courthouse once renovations are complete.
