FRIDAY ROUNDUP: Rain's a pain

Rain forced the postponement of the Wapakoneta Redskins’ Western Buckeye League varsity boys tennis opener Friday against the Van Wert Cougars.

It was also the first match for the boys team at the new Rotary Club courts at the high school.

Play was suspended in the middle of the first sets and will be resumed Monday.

The Redskins were coming off a 4-1 loss in their season opener Thursday at Sidney Lehman.

BASEBALL: Indians fell W-G

WAYNESFIELD — Costly errors came back to haunt the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers as they suffered an 8-2 loss to the Fort Recovery Indians in a six-inning non-league varsity baseball game Friday at Waynesfield-Goshen High School.

Of the Indians’ eight runs, five of them were batters who reached base either on an error or a walk.

The Tigers actually outhit Fort Recovery 9-7.  But W-G couldn’t convert and left 11 runners on base.

The loss dropped W-G to 0-4 on the season.

Mary Ann Wincelowicz, 93

Mary Ann Wincelowicz, 93, passed away on March 28, 2012.
She was born Aug. 26, 1918, to Elizabeth and Frank Kohler. She married John Wincelowicz Sr., who is deceased.
Surviving are three sons, John Wincelowicz Jr., Joseph Wincelowicz, and James Wincelowicz; four daughters, Joan Hughart, Jane Wagner, Julie Pack, and Jean Rojas; two sisters, Jane Steining, of Ohio, and Elizabeth Wincelowicz, of Florida; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Donald G. McName Sr., 82

Donald G. McName Sr., 82, of Lima, formerly of Buckland, died at 9:27 a.m. Thursday, March 29, 2012, at Koester Pavilion, in Troy.
He was born April 6, 1929, in Buckland, the son of Ruth (Flarida) and Walter E. McName, who preceded him in death. He was married to Dorothy Sneary and Inez Lotters.

Terry G. Wehner, 72

Terry G. Wehner, 72, of Lima, died at 8:42 a.m. Thursday, March 29, 2012, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.
She was born Nov. 27, 1939 in Sanford, N.C. to Mabel Mitchell and Herb Williams. On Dec. 31, 1966, she married Norman Eugene Wehner Sr, and he preceded her in death July 1, 1998.
Surviving are a son, Brad Epling, of Boca Raton, Fla.; and four daughters, Kim C. Hardesty, of Ft. Myers, Fla., Cynthia L. Thomas, of Elida, Nancy L. Hedrick, of West Chester, and Rebecca G. Epling, of Elida.

Don Gay, 83

Don Gay, 83, died at 6:15 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, 2012, at Lima Memorial Health Systems.
He was born Jan. 3, 1929, in Franklin, the son of Thelma (Renner) and John Gay. On June 18, 1950, he married Maudie J. Prater, and she survives in Waynesfield.
Surviving is a son, Jerry Gay, of Columbus; and a daughter, Bonnie Yale, of Waynesfield.
Services are at 11 a.m. today at Armentrout Funeral Home in Waynesfield, with the Revs. Don Smith and David C. Hawthorne officiating. Burial will follow at Willow Branch Cemetery in Waynesfield.

Program released

The Auglaize County engineer scheduled 21 structures for replacement or rehabilitation as part of Auglaize County’s bridge replacement program in 2012.

The total price tag for the projects is $549,200, with $200,000 representing material costs.

“It’s all very labor intensive,” Auglaize County Engineer Doug Reinhart said. “By the fact that income from license plate fees and gasoline taxes for 2012 are projected below the income seen in 2006, much of the program will be comprised of bridge rehabilitation.

Local wins award

For one local woman attending the Lima Jefferson Awards banquet earlier this week as one of eight finalists served as a recognition for her work beyond her belief.

As she sat in the audience Tuesday reflecting on the accomplishments of the other seven people, Wapakoneta’s Marlene Froning says she was just so honored to be mentioned with an esteemed group where any of the others work could earn them the privilege of attending the national Jefferson Awards in Washington, D.C. ­— and then they called her name.

Audio for a cause

As owners and operators of JCS Audio, Jean and John Slone looked forward to providing sound for the Auglaize County Relay For Life each year.

For 12 years, the Slones offered their sound services at a substantially reduced rate for the relay.

“We would do all of the sound from start until the end,” Jean Slone said. “We played music while people were walking. We would provide sound for the opening and closing ceremony. Some years we had bands or choirs or other acts. We would set up the sound for everything.”

Donald G. McName, 82, of Lima, formerly of Buckland, died at 9:27 a.m. Thursday, March 29, 2012, at Koester Pavilion in Troy.
