Wapakoneta Redskins varsity softball coach Bill Sammons searched for the words for a moment.
“I was actually — I don’t know how you say it — ‘cautiously surprised’ at our team,” Sammons said. “We’re young at some spots. But I was surprised because I really think we can compete for a league title.

When Ashley Knippen heard them in October, her senior year appeared to be over, at least in sporting terms.
So when Knippen trotted out to her spot in center field for the first inning of the Redskins’ season opener on Tuesday, most everyone agreed it was the best play of the game.

Genevieve Russell, 74, 416 Beech St., St. Marys, died Saturday,, March 24, 2012, at St. Marys Living Center.
She was born Oct. 10, 1936, in St. Marys, to Callie (Starkey) and John Goodwin.
Surviving is a daughter, Donna Baker, of St. Marys.
Private family services will be held.

Ruth Stentz, 91, of Elida, died at 1:45 p.m. Sunday, March 25, 2012, at Cridersville Health Care Center.
She was born July 4, 1920, in Lima, the daughter of Laura (Hunter) and Edward Eggleston. She married Manuel Martin who preceded her in death. On July 3, 1947, she married Rolland E. Stentz, who died Aug. 12, 2006.
Surviving is a son, Leonard L. Martin, of Lima; and a daughter, Ruthellen Rhine, of Cridersville.
She was preceded by a son, Dale Edward Martin, and a daughter, Joan Martin.
Mildred Deloris Champ Oen, 83, formerly of Redkey, Ind., and Minster, died at 12:10 a.m. Monday, March 26, 2012, in Albany following an extended illness.
Mildred Oen was born Oct. 10, 1928, in Cambridge, Ohio, the daughter of Beatrice (Thomas) and William Tracey. She was married to Eugene (Gene) Champ in 1949 and he died in 1980. In 1989 she married Daniel Oen and he died in 2007.
Roger Lee Tangeman Jr., 51, of Pataskala, formerly of Jackson Center, died Thursday, March 22, 2012.
Services are at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Salm-McGill and Tangeman Funeral Home in Sidney.
Steven Dale Martin, 56, of Wapakoneta, and formerly of Springfield, died Wednesday, March 21, 2012, at his residence.
He was born Oct. 25, 1955, in Dayton, the son of Wanda Mae Massie and Dale Arthur Martin. On Sept. 30, 1994, he married Winnie Kay Lacy, who survives in Wapakoneta.
Survivors are two sons, Scott Martin, of Springfield, and Kyle Martin, of Springfield.
There are no public services or visitations planned.

R. Bruce Adair, 66, of Wapakoneta, died at 11:33 a.m. Friday, March 23, 2012, at Lima Memorial Health System.
He was born June 21, 1945, in Lima, the son of Pauline (Kohn) and Gaylan E. Adair, who preceded him in death. On Jan. 2, 1970, he married Bonnie C. Heffner, and she survives.
With no questions from the board or comments from the public, only the Wapakoneta City School Board of Education president addressed the decision to eliminate an elementary music teacher’s position.
Christina Riddle’s position was eliminated unanimously Tuesday through a reduction in force (RIF) program during a regular board meeting at Wapakoneta Elementary School.
