Margaret Rider, 80

February 29, 2012

Margaret L. Rider, 80, 160 Watercrest Drive, St. Marys, died at 11:05 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27, 2012, at her residence.
She was born Sept. 12, 1931, in Rossburg, the daughter of Edith (Compton) and Jesse Ross. On June 27, 1953, at Shook’s Chapel in Darke County she married Allen L. Rider, who survives.
Also surviving are a son Jeffrey Rider, of Ansonia; and a daughter Cynthia Coats, of St. Marys.
Services are at 11 a.m. Friday at Miller Funeral Home in St. Marys, with the Rev. Mark Foor officiating. Burial will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery in St. Marys.

Sue Thompson, 73

Sue Thompson, 73, 118 Ohio St., St. Marys, died at 12:10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2012, at the Lima Manor Nursing Home.
She was born Aug. 20, 1938, in Indianapolis, the daughter of Thelma (Kent) and Clarence Thompson.
Services are at 11 a.m. Monday at the Miller Funeral Home in St. Marys, with the Rev. Bill Drummond officiating. Burial will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery.
Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Contributions may be made to the Sue Thompson Memorial Fund.

BASKETBALL: Greve's three sinks St. Marys

LIMA — It didn’t matter if that was how the play was drawn up.

“He made it,” Wapakoneta Redskins coach Matt Bradley said.

Yes, he did.

Alex Greve’s 3-pointer with two seconds left on the clock lifted the Redskins to a 43-40 win over the rival St. Marys Roughriders in a Division II boys basketball sectional semifinal Tuesday night at Lima Senior High School.

BASKETBALL: Raiders eliminate Trojans

PIQUA — The Russia Raiders slid by the Botkins Trojans for a 55-41 victory in a Division IV boys basketball sectional semifinal Tuesday night at Piqua High School, but not without a struggle.

Down six at the half, Russia went on a 15-0 run to start the third quarter and quickly stretched its lead to 39-32.

“Coming out of halftime, we managed to take care of the ball, rebound the basketball and keep Botkins to one point,” Russia coach Paul Bremigan said.

Wapak JRS: CSX Select: Wapak industrial land earns rail site certification

CSX Corp. announced this week Wapakoneta’s West Central Ohio Industrial Center earned certification under its new CSX Select Sites program.

Wapakoneta city leaders received notification Tuesday that the 471-acre site — developed using state Job Ready Sites (JRS) funds and certified by the Ohio Department of Development in October 2010 as one of the first JRS site in the state — received CSX certification as one of the first CSX Select Site.

Time to leap a day

After a moment of silence marking the tragic shooting at Chardon High School on Monday, Wapakoneta City Schools Board of Education members heard from a community member and a teacher about local concerns on unrelated matters.

“It’s so refreshing to walk in here tonight,” said Francine Slife, a community member who has several family members who teach in the district.

“The air is so much thinner,” she said, thanking board members for their recent ratification of a contract with teachers.

Earl Miller, 88

February 28, 2012

Earl Eugene Miller, 88, of Harrod, died at 8:40 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012, at his home.
He was born April 25, 1923, in Wapakoneta, the son of Mary Luelle (Zimmerman) and Robert Miller. He married Clarisa Jean Derringer and she preceded him in death. On Sept. 17, 1954, he married Barbara Smith and she survives.
Also surviving are four sons, Larry Edward Miller, of Harrod, Rick Gene Smith, of Harrod, Randal Eugene Miller, of Harrod, and Kennneth Dale Miller, of Kenton; and three daughters, Debra Darlene Brookman, of Lima, Janet Eileen Metzger, of Lafayette, and Greta Ann Miller, of Harrod.

Robert Keller, 66

Robert Keller, 66, of Marlinton, W. Va., died suddenly at home early Saturday morning, Feb. 25, 2012.
He was born Oct. 1, 1945, in Canton, the son of the late Mary Lou Marchand and Cecil Keller. He married Patricia Ravenscroft, who survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Katie Keller (Eric) Barrie, and Mollie Kristine Keller (Justin) Korona; two grandchildren, Jackson Barrie, and Logan Korona; two sisters, Barbara Keller (Rob) Frische, and Judi Keller (Ken) Blanton; and a nephew, Eric Marling.
