Sue Gasson, 62

December 27, 2011

Sue Gasson, 62, 909 Motz St., St. Marys, died at 6:15 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 24, 2011, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys.
She was born Nov. 26, 1949, the daughter of Leota (Keiber) Brincefield.
On June 17, 1967, she married Paul Gasson and he preceded her in death Feb. 7, 2011.
She is survived by a daughter, Amy Abbott, of St. Marys.
Services are at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Miller Funeral Home in St. Marys, with the Rev. Bill Drummond officiating.
Friends may call from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Eva Kimmel, 74

Eva M. Kimmel 74, of Lima died at 8:48 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 22, 2011 at Lima Memorial Health System.
She was born March 1, 1937, in Lima, the daughter of Mamie (Obshawn) and Thomas Jennings in Lima, who preceded her in death.
Surviving are two sons, Paul (Melissa) Kimmel, and Larry T. (Danielle) Kimmel; and two daughters, Robin (Dave) Bambaloff, Patricia (Dave) Trusty; and grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A private family service will be held at a later date.
Contributions may be directed to the family.

Snow plow plan: Wapak council chair favors new approach to battle snow on streets

One city elected official says he believes the best scenario is never having to utilize the equipment purchased for an emergency or for inclement weather, but he also realizes that thought is unrealistic.
Wapakoneta City Council 4th Ward Councilor Dan Graf said while the saying is often used by fire chiefs regarding fire trucks, he believes the adage can be applied to the harsh road conditions battled by members of the Public Works Department and local motorists.
He also thinks a new plan developed this year should help in fighting the war against ice and snow.

Final note: Local retires from music lessons after 60 years

A local woman who has a passion for music has retired from giving music lessons, but will never retire from her love for music.
Mary Margaret Barlage has studied music all of her life, and has been teaching music lessons at her home, including piano, organ, guitar, vocal and accordion, for the past 60 years.
Last Tuesday marked Barlage’s last music lesson, after 60 years, and she said she felt it was time to retire.
“I have studied music all of my life,” Barlage said. “Music has always been easy to me. It’s a gift.”

Gymnastics, sports, job keeps student jumping

A Wapakoneta Middle School student has a busy schedule each day of the week, but she would not like it any other way.
Between sports, dance and her paper route, Wapakoneta Middle School sixth-grader Kayla Crawford has something to do every day, but she is not complaining.
“I live being active and staying busy,” Crawford said. “I always have something to do.”
Along with doing what most 12-year-olds do, Crawford takes on sports, extra-curriculars and a job.
The dancer has picked up tumbling and lyrical lessons at The Dance Centre, and in her first year back, after a short hiatus.

WRESTLING: 'Skins ready for Brecksville tourney

Even though the state wrestling tournament is still in the distant future, Wapakoneta wrestlers will get a glimpse of what might await them in March when the Redskins compete in the 51st annual Brecksville Holiday Invitational Tournament on Thursday and Friday.

This year’s edition of the long-standing tournament boasts 37 of some of the best teams in the state of Ohio and one squad from Georgia. Individually 98 of the grapplers entered have state tournament experience with a little more than half of those placing at state in 2011.

Verlin Hirschfeld, 93

Verlin W. Hirschfeld, 93, of New Bremen, died at 10:20 p.m. Dec. 24, 2011, at the Convalarium at Indian Run in Dublin.
He was born Jan. 6, 1918, in New Bremen, the son of Emma A. (Oberwitte) and Edward G. Hirschfeld. On July 5, 1942, he married Enola Luedeke and she survives in Dublin.
Also surviving are two sons, Gary Hirschfeld, of Findlay, Craig Hirschfeld, of New Bremen; and a daughter, Christine Hirschfeld Kelser of Dublin.
