Dorothy Breneman, 84

June 2, 2011

Dorothy Jean Breneman, 84, of Wapakoneta, passed away the morning of May 30, 2011, at her residence.
S h e was born May 14, 1 9 2 7 , in Hardin County, the daughter of Olevia (Johnson) and Artie Gossard. Both parents are deceased. On Jan.1, 1949, she married Victor L. Breneman who preceded her in death April 30, 2001.

TRACK: Tigers set for state meet

WAYNESFIELD — By now the journey to Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus has become a familiar one for the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers.
They will make that trek once again for the Division III state track and field meet Friday and Saturday on the campus of the Ohio State University.
And if all goes well, they’ll be bringing some hardware home with them.
W-G’s best bet for a state champion is the girls 400-meter relay team of senior Abbey Gray, junior Morgan Horn, senior Frankie James and junior Ivy Horn.

BASEBALL: Wapak wins ACME opener

Wapakoneta opened the 2011 ACME season with a win, edging Indian Lake 3-1 on Wednesday at Wapakoneta High School.

“[Y]ou could tell some of these guys have not played for a couple of weeks,” Wapak coach Nick Sammetinger said. “I am happy with the performance but will continue to challenge each player to improve every day.”

Marshall Gerlach threw a complete-game, five-hitter for the win. Gerlach threw just 89 pitches, 67 of them for strikes.

He struck out 14 and walked just two. He allowed just one run, an unearned run in the seventh inning.

Club to showcase gardens

A local garden club is hosting a tour of local gardens in Wapakoneta on Sunday.
The Roots and Shoots Garden Club will have a tour of five private gardens and one public garden in the area. This event will be held from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.
“Local home owners have graciously opened their beautiful gardens for public viewing to benefit the Roots and Shoots Garden Club,” member of the Roots and Shoots Garden Club Michele Bishop said.

WACF gains trustee

The newest trustee appointed to serve on the Wapakoneta Area Community Foundation is fulfilling her late mother-in-law’s last term.
Denise Wintzer is to serve for Mary Alice Wintzer, one of the board’s original members since 1989, through her term’s expiration on Oct. 31, 2015.
While Denise Wintzer said no one can replace her mother-in-law, she was looking forward to the position and its ability to allow her to give back to her community.
Larry Tester, who serves as the foundation’s executive director, said the younger Wintzer came highly recommended.

Seeking renewal

With renewal of a contract with an international realtor pending, Wapakoneta Area Economic Development Council (WAEDC) members discussed ways they would improve the deal.
WAEDC Executive Director Greg Myers said he believes renewing the contract, which came up for review this May as it creeps toward its one year anniversary, would be beneficial for Wapakoneta as city administrators continue to seek investment into the 471-acre Job Ready Site certified manufacturing site.

Larose Gossette, 89

June 1, 2011

Larose B. Gossette, 89, of New Bremen, died at 4:45 a.m. Friday, May 27, 2011, at the St. Marys Living Center.
She was born on April 19, 1922, near New Bremen, the daughter of Bertha (Poppe) and Dicke.
Surviving are two sons, Michael Gossette of Reno, Nev., David (Alice) Gossette of New Bremen; and two daughters, Ann (Bernd) Graf of San Jose, Calif., and Susan (Thomas) Rengers of New Bremen.
Services are at 10 a.m. Friday at the St. Paul United Church of Christ in New Bremen, the Rev. Becky Erb Strang officiating. Burial will follow in the German Protestant Cemetery in New Bremen.

Thomas Lee, 70

June 1, 2011

Thomas R. Lee, 70, of Lima, died at 4:40 p.m. Friday, May 27, 2011, in Triumph Hospital, Lima.
He was born Dec. 12, 1940, in Lima, the son of Henrietta (Clement) and Harry D. Lee.
Survivors are a son, Darwin Thomas (Jane Ann) Lee, of Lima; and a daughter Christina S. Rinderle, of Cincinnati.
Friends may call from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Bayliff & Son Funeral Home in Cridersville.
