Garrett Rhodes, 21

Garrett Rhodes, 21, 06950 County Road 33A, Wapakoneta, died Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011, at the scene of a single-vehicle accident in rural Auglaize County.
He was born Aug. 8, 1990, in St. Marys, the son of Donny L. Rhodes of Wapakoneta and mother Samantha Clouser of St. Marys.
Services are at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Miller Funeral Home in St. Marys. Private family burial will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in St. Marys.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Harold Suchland, 90

Harold L. Suchland, 90, 9 Haarbye St., New Bremen, died at 1:35 p.m. Sunday, September 18, 2011, at the St. Marys Living Center.
He was born June 11, 1921, in St. Marys, the son of Maude (Dowden) and Rueben Suchland. On Oct. 18, 1942, he married Helen E. Menchhofer and she preceded him in death on December 28, 2008.
Survivors are his children, Harold E. Suchland, Jim Suchland, Mike Suchland, all of New Bremen, and Tom Suchland of North Pole, Alaska.

Ferdinand Fisher, 68

Ferdinand Thomas Fisher, 68, previously of Wapakoneta, died Sept. 19, 2011, at Winterhaven Hospital in Winterhaven, Fla.
He was born June 26, 1943, in Wapakoneta, the son of Reba (Wirick) and Earl Fisher. In July of 1966, he married Linda Steinecker. On March 29, 1980, he married Constance (Luma) Conaway, and she survives in Bowling Green, Fla.

DEFIANCE — The Wapakoneta Redskins scored twice in the first six minutes and cruised to a 3-1 win over the Defiance Bulldogs in a Western Buckeye League varsity boys soccer match Monday at Defiance.
Junior Travis Bertram put Wapak on the board at the 4:17 mark. And less than two minutes later, freshman Will Hinegardner made it 2-0.
The Redskins all but sealed the win in the 14th minute as senior Andy Faller scored on an assist from Pablo Arroyo to give Wapak the three-goal lead.

Mayors seek funding help for LTCP projects

Wapakoneta city administrators say they would take advantage of zero percent interest loans or direct financial assistance to help with long-term control plans (LTCP) to eliminate raw sewage from entering nearby waterways, if members of Congress can be swayed to help.
Wapakoneta City Council members approved Monday a resolution by a 5-1 vote to endorse a United States Conference of Mayors decree which requests Congress reform the federal Clean Water Act as it relates to long-term control plans (LTCP) for wastewater and stormwater.

City buys school property for parks

Wapakoneta’s mayor says he’s pleased councilors approved purchasing two plots of land to expand the park system, but he also understands the reasons one councilor voted against the deal.
Wapakoneta City Council members voted 5-1 Monday to purchase approximately 10 acres of Wapakoneta City School property where the former Centennial Elementary School was located at a cost not to exceed $90,000. Councilors also voted 5-1 to purchase school ground and two buildings on land east of the Wapakoneta WaterPark for $35,000.

Art center to kick off local artist exhibit

The Riverside Art Center is soon to kick-off an exhibit featuring submitted art work from local residents.
The fourth annual Fall Juried Art Show is set to host its opening reception from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday at the Riverside Art Center.
“I am amazed of the diversity of the artists in the area,” Riverside Art Center Publicity Chair Maggie Bowsher said. “There is everything from clay to watercolor.”
Anyone in the area was eligible to submit their artwork to the exhibit, and 63 pieces of art were chosen for the display and to be judged.
