Lifeguard uses job to enhance skills

At times the job of lifeguard can become mundane.
But Wapakoneta’s Kayla Prater finds the job anything but mundane as she has taken the position as a chance to enhance her communications skills since she has chosen that area as her future profession.
Prater, who began working at the park her sophomore year of high school, has now worked at the Wapakoneta WaterPark for four years and has become a familiar, friendly face to its many patrons over the summer months. She is now beginning her second year at Ohio University working on earning a degree in communications studies.

NFL: Horn plays, records reception

Waynesfield-Goshen product Joe Horn saw his first game action for the Indianapolis Colts in a 16-3 exhibition loss to the Washington Redskins on Friday at Indianapolis.
With 3:11 left in the game, Horn caught a 12-yard pass to the left from Dan Orlovsky. He picked up a first down on the play. But the Colts were unable to move the chains again in what would be their final possession of the game.
Horn missed the Colts’ first exhibition game with an injury.

Wapak to honor '86 team

The Wapakoneta athletic department will be recognizing the 1986 WBL Championship football team, coaches and cheerleaders before the Wapakoneta vs. Bellefontaine football game on Friday. Honorees and their families are invited to attend a social gathering at the Middle School cafeteria at 5:30 p.m., a tour of the building at 6, and the recognition at 7.

GOLF: Perrysburg, Bellefontaine top Wapak girls

The Redskins varsity girls golf team finished third in a tri-match against Bellefontaine and Perrysburg at the Wapakoneta Country Club.
Perrysburg won the event with a scored of 175. Bellefontaine posted a 197. And Wapak turned in a 209.
Bellefontaine’s Jascey Vermillion carded a 41 to take medalist honors.
“We played pretty good tonight,” Wapak coach Dawn West said. “The golf course has changed in the last week to being very fast and hard, so our girls did a nice job of adapting to the condition change that they are not accustomed to.”

TENNIS: Wapak sweeps Spartans

LIMA - Wapak’s varsity girls tennis team swept the Lima Senior Spartans 5-0 at Lima Senior.
Annie Harrod blanked Lima Senior’s Alexis Smith 6-0, 6-0 in first singles.
The Spartans were forced to forfeit in second and third singles.
In first doubles, the Redskins’ Katie Martin and Kirsten Wellons shut out Erica Schlesselman and Brooklyn Mason 6-0, 6-0.
Wapak’s Chloe Veit and Carly Buzzard routed Ryan Crockett and Amelia Upthegrove 6-0, 6-2 in second doubles.
The win lifts Wapak to 3-0 on the young season.
The Redskins next match is Monday afternoon at 4:30 at WBL foe Elida.

GOLF: Wapak boys 17th at Celina Invitational

CELINA — The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity boys golf team finished 17th at the 24-team Celina Invitational on Friday at Fox’s Den in Celina.
The inexperienced Wapak squad turned in a team score of 344 but was just a few strokes from finishing in the top half of the pack.

City Bakery seeking help to reopen

A landmark business along Auglaize Street in downtown Wapakoneta may be in danger of not reopening.
The City Bakery, located at 20 W. Auglaize St., has been closed since July 1, when natural gas to the building was turned off due to an inability to pay bills.
“It’s bad,” said owner Rod Sidel, 48, who also lives upstairs of the bake shop.
This week, electricity to the business he took over from his parents approximately seven years ago also was disconnected.

Dreams come true — Wapakoneta girl meets Cinderella

A Wapakoneta girl, born with a heart condition, had one wish — meeting Cinderella at her castle.
Four-year-old Nevaeh Walp had her wish granted — where dreams do come true.
She, along with her family, traveled to Florida to meet Cinderella and other princesses at Walt Disney World, through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The family, which included Nevaeh’s parents, Tina and Jon Walp, and her sister, Gabrielle, 7, joined Cinderella for breakfast in her castle.

Residents to be assessed for logjam project

Auglaize County residents are to be among those in six counties affected by a proposed Auglaize River stream enhancement project being spearheaded by the Allen County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD).
Two hearings have been scheduled for landowners on Sept. 13, one at 2 p.m. at the Fort Jennings American Legion, and one at 7 p.m. at the Junior Fair Building at the Auglaize County Fairgrounds in Wapakoneta.

Steven H. Shrock, 71

Steven H. Shrock, 71, of 10805 Celina-Mendon Road, Mendon, died at 8:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 19, 2011, at his residence following an extended illness.
He was born Jan. 13, 1940, in Elwood, Ind., the son of Claudine (Garner) and John Shrock, who preceded him in death.
He married Karen Smith on Feb. 15, 1958, and she survives at the residence.
He is also survived by three sons, Steven Shrock Jr., of Versailles; Dave Shrock, of Celina; and Scott Schrock, of Mendon.
