Wapak football chicken dinner

The Wapak Football Parents will be holding a chicken dinner on Friday, Aug. 19 prior to the scrimmage with Minster and Triad.
The dinners are prepared by the American Legion and include a half chicken, applesauce, chips, and roll and butter. The presale ticket price is $7.
Pick up time is 4:30-6:30 at the west entrance to Harmon Field, with drive-up service on Hamilton St.
Come out and enjoy a chicken dinner and cheer on the Redskins! To order tickets call Dorinda Schmerge at 419-236-1531.
Saturday, Aug. 13 is the last day to order tickets.

Rollover crash

August 12, 2011

The Wapakoneta Post of the Ohio State Patrol investigated a one-car crash on U.S. 33 Friday. A passenger in the vehicle was transported from the scene. An officer said a female driver, a male passenger, and a child passenger were in the vehicle at the time of the crash. No other information was available.

UPDATE:
Further information revealed that in fact a male driver had been driving the vehicle after investigation was done by the OSP.

Petitions certified by county elections board

Crews from Shelley work on milling Hamilton Street, near the intersection of Auglaize Street, in preparation for paving on Friday. The paving company will continue today with paving beginning in the morning on Nottingham Drive in Sherwood Forest and later in the morning paving will begin on Hamilton Street between West Auglaize Street to Glynwood Road. On Monday, the contractor will be working to complete another job outside the Wapakoneta area, and on Tuesday, the contractor will finish paving Hamilton Street. The schedule is subject to change due to inclement weather.

United Way  selects 2011 campaign chair

A former Wapakoneta city administrator and Auglaize County native is the 2011 United Way campaign chair, a United Way of Auglaize County official announced this week.
New Knoxville Village Administrator Rex Katterheinrich agreed to serve as the United Way of Auglaize County campaign chair for 2011.
“I’m pleased to be able to work with Randy Fisher and the United Way Board to have a better opportunity to help those in need,” Katterheinrich said.

Virginia Vincent, 89

Virginia L. Vincent, 89, of Lima, died at 5:05 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2011, at Elm Croft Assisted Living in Lima.
She was born Sept. 11, 1921, in Detroit, the daughter of Elizabeth (Boczek) and Jacob Zalesku. On Oct. 11, 1941, she married John “Jack Vincent who died Nov. 18, 1978.
She is survived by a daughter, Sherrly E. Vincent Wheeler, of Lima.
Private services will be held at Resurrection Cemetery in Mount Clemens, Mich., the Rev. Jerry Slowinski officiating.

John Slone, 56

John C. Slone, 56, of Wapakoneta, formerly of Plymouth, died at 7:40 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, 2011, at his residence.
He was born May 30, 1955, in South Bend, Ind., the son of Emma Jean (Hatton) and Charlie Joe Slone. On June 28, 1998, he married Jean Ella Binkley, who survives.
Also surviving is a son, Brandon Edward Slone, of Willard.
Services will be held at a later date.
There will be no visitation.
Contributions can be given to the family for Brandon’s education.
Thomas E. Bayliff Funeral Home in Spencerville is handling arrangements.

Theresa Neal, 59

Theresa Jane “Tess” Neal, 59,of Waynesfield, died at 3:12 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, 2011, at her residence.
She was born Aug. 18, 1951, in Lima, to Melvina “Jewel” (Hagan) and Melvin F. Hawkins. On Aug. 9, 1980, she married Donald Neal and he survives in Waynesfield.
Also surviving are a son, John F. (Amber) Neal, of Buckland; and a daughter, Sarah J. Neal, of Harrod.
Services are at 11 a.m. Monday at Waynesfield Baptist Church, the Revs. Don Smith and James Blevens officiating.
Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church.

Carl R. ‘Dick’ Heil, 92

Carl R. “Dick” Heil, 92, of Cridersville, formerly of Wapakoneta, died at 12:20 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 11, 2011, at Otterbein-Cridersville.
He was born Nov. 21, 1918, in Auglaize County, the son of Emma (Cook) and Herbert Heil, who preceded him in death. On July 10, 1945, he married Lanetta Mills, and she died Jan. 4, 1977. On Dec. 22, 1984, he married Mary E. Shaw, and she survives.

Betty Schroer, 88

Betty L. Schroer, 88, 519 Westhaven Drive, New Bremen, died at 7 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011 at Heritage Manor Nursing Center in Minster.
She was born on Jan. 21, 1923, in St. Marys, the daughter of Malinda (Gieseke) and Virgil Horn. On Sept. 25, 1955, she married Curtis Schroer who survives in New Bremen.
Also surviving are a son, Dwight Schroer, of New Bremen; and a daughter, Kathleen Aufderhaar, of Bluffton.
Services are at 2 p.m. Friday at German Protestant Cemetery in New Bremen, with the Rev. Stephen Wills officiating.
