The health education director for the Auglaize County Health Department recently received recognition as a “Distinguished Toastmaster.”
Janet Bassitt, 58, of Wapakoneta, was presented with the award, including a plaque and medallion, during a recent district conference.
Having joined the local Toastmasters Group, Grand Lake Toastmasters, of St. Marys, to improve her communication skills, Bassitt said she never anticipated achieving the highest level of recognition members of the international organization can earn.

When reflecting on the past couple of months, Wapakoneta Police Chief Russ Hunlock offers this simple maxim about people intending to experiment with “bath salts” — “don’t do it, don’t do it, don’t do it.”
Bath salts, which are a product with no real practical use, are a synthetic hallucinative drug, which can be snorted, injected, ingested or smoked and are legal in Ohio — for now. An amendment to the state’s biennial operations budget bill would make them illegal with its passage.
A local dancing celebrity will be returning home to host a dance workshop to raise funds for his alma mater.
A “Dance Worshop with Kent Boyd” is scheduled be held at 6 p.m. July 12 at Botkins High School with the proceeds to benefit the Botkins Music Boosters.
“It’s a good way to give back to the school,” Kent Boyd’s mother, Lori Boyd said. “Kent was very active in choir in high school.”
Boyd said her son recently held a dance workshop in Fort Wayne, ind., around Easter and she attended the event to help him sell t-shirts. She thought the workshop was a neat idea.
The office of the Waynesfield Baptist Church was reportedly broken into overnight Monday.
The burglary is believed to have occurred between 9:15 p.m. Monday and 9:15 a.m. Tuesday at the church, located at 512 N. Westminster St., Waynesfield, according to a deputy’s report from the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office.
Beth Hudson, 208 S. Westminster St., reported it.
No additional information was available on the incomplete report.

• A Wapakoneta woman reported problems with telecommunication harassment between 8:35 and 9:50 p.m. Tuesday.
Roger E. Mathews, 87, of Lima, died at 1:26 a.m. Wednesday, June 22, 2011, at Lima Memorial Health Systems.
He was born April 12, 1924, in Lima, the son of Esther Foulke and Ross U. Mathews. On Nov. 19, 1942, he married Betty Bernadine Stoner, who died Jan. 14, 2007.
Surviving are two sons, Mike (Barbara) Mathews, of Harrod, Mark (Mary) Mathews, of Waynesfield; and a daughter, Sandra Dunlap, of Lima.
He was preceded in death by a son, Clark Mathews.
Celina sent 11 batters to the plate in a third inning pummeling to secure a 7-2 victory over Wapakoneta in ACME action Wednesday at Wapakoneta High School.

The Auglaize County Relay for Life, which raises money for the fight against cancer, is quickly approaching.
The theme for this year’s event will be “Happy Birthday: A Celebration of Life, Come Celebrate Your Birthday With Us.” The event is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. on Friday with an opening ceremony, followed by a Survivor’s Lap and Survivor’s Dinner. The event is slated to end at noon on Saturday, concluding with closing ceremonies.
“We all have our own reason why we relay,” spokeswoman Tiffany Fullenkamp said. “For me, it’s for my brother.”
COLUMBUS (AP) — Ohio State University on Tuesday dropped its review of car purchases by football players and family members after two separate investigations found dealerships made money on almost all of the sales.
The university made its decision in light of a report by the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles and a separate review by the Ohio Independent Automobile Dealers Association.
"We have seen no evidence that would lead us to believe that Ohio State student athletes violated any policies when purchasing used cars," said university spokesman Jim Lynch.
Lucille E. Lehman, 97, 216 N. Buckeye St., St. Marys, died at 9:41 a.m. on June 17, 2011, at the St. Marys Living Center.
She was born Feb. 18, 1914, in Mansfield, to Gertrude (Cunningham) and Gail Van Tilbrough. On Aug. 31, 1934, she married Daniel Dale Lehman, who died July 27, 1986.
Surviving are two daughters, Linda Mallory, of St. Marys, and Judy (Wayne) Wilson, of Largo, Fla.
Services are at noon Saturday at Miller Funeral Home in St. Marys.
Friends may call from 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Grand lake Hospice.
With a growing concern regarding the use of “bath salts,” legislation is being crafted to ban the synthetic drug from store shelves and to make the use of the cocaine-LSD substitute a criminal offense.
Wapakoneta City Council Health and Safety Committee members recommended city Law Director Dennis Faller to write legislation for the city using an ordinance developed by the city of Mansfield along with verbiage from the state’s amendment to budget bill banning the substance with additional information from other municipalities.
